Pictures Conformation thoughts?

Unfortunately if that were to happen, and his pasterns did drop, it would make his front leg conformation even worse and I already think they're poor from the photos as they are now. It could be the photo angle but the near fore is particularly weak.

I don't think it would. I think his front leg conformation is like that because he doesn't want to weight his heels. I've seen "over at the knee" horses come straight when they can stand comfortably on their own feet. Obviously we'd need to see the horse in person to know what was causing it.

It's not the over at the knee that bothers me (and I actually don't think he is very over the knee).
It's from the cannon bone down and the foot being so far forward of the knee, rather than under it, that I don't like.
He also might not have thrush and just has that leg conformation- my welshie has similar with the foot forward of the leg and I don't like it on him, however he was bought to be a companion primarily and anything he does ridden wise is a bonus!

I do agree they could just be bad photos though and you'd need to see him in person to decide that 🙂
However unless he was very, very, close, those photos wouldn't make me jump in the car.

Yes, I understand you. It's a problem with long pasterns. I've got a soft spot for long pasterns because they often make for a smooth ride but I've never had a long pastern horse long enough to know whether they cause long term soundness issues. My guess would be they do in a horse doing fast work and jumping in particular. I'd certainly want him to be very cheap!

My 7yo ISH who is now semi retired (suspensory issues in all 4 limbs plus other things) has sloping pasterns, they're also longer than ideal. I don't think long pasterns always cause a issue as know 2 friends who have been eventing years on 2 with noticeably long pasterns but they're not sloped just long.

I think they'd let him go for small money, just over £1k maybe. But I'm trying to avoid long and sloping pasterns going forward even if cheap, the horse will still be at a livery yard.

Not read the comments but, when you see the pecs ie sternum sticking out at the front you know a good proportion of what you're looking at is poor posture. The neck, shoulder and back angle could change hugely just through correct postural work. Agree that over at the knee is not always (often?) conformational and fixed. Even pastern angles change, even DSLD ones from a post from a trusted source the other day (though damned if I can remember who posted a before and after).

Doesn’t look like he’ll be easy to fit a saddle to? He’s very typical flat TB conformation to me. Not the sort that would interest me.

Improving the posture would change that more than most would imagine. I'm in a saddle fit advice group on FB where, I swear, every SINGLE person saying how challenging their horse is to fit has a horse with postural issues (and maybe other stuff too but....).

I decided to leave that gelding based on his conformation and movement in the videos. Thanks all

My bad luck continues from my sick note mare to trying to find another..

I was suppose to see a gelding last month, at a race yard. Spoke in detail, discussed price. He sounded perfect. Arranged to view that weekend then I get a message to say the owners have found someone else but I sound very suitable so if it falls through they’ll be in touch.

Another gelding at a race yard, spoke in detail and again he sounded ideal. Received videos, Arranged to view him the next evening and started to get excited. Received a message to say the owner wants him to go to a friend of hers.

I saw a gelding for sale yesterday, he looked perfect in all the photos. Asked for some videos and received them. Asked if I could view him Friday (and would be happy to pay a holding deposit as I’ve had several unluckily sell from under me)
Not had a response back since.. I’ve got their number so going to call in a couple of hours if I don’t get anything.

This is so draining 😞

Please do not pay a deposit before you view, unless you are happy to lose it. It is such a common scam nowadays, I would rather take the risk of it getting sold from under me

I think the OP was offering a small deposit (as an indication of her serious intent to buy) rather than the seller requesting it. Which is a bit different.

Message all your local trainers directly. Say what sort of size you are looking for. It's going to be binning time very soon for flat horses so a good time.

Thanks LEC. I’ve already contacted all the trainers within 1hr 30 from me. They said they’d keep me in mind.

Just came here to say never will I ever buy a horse with long pasterns, sloping pasterns, soft pasterns, flexible pasterns, and/or any level of drop I even have a question about. I've ridden horses with shorter pasterns that were more comfortable than those with longer pasterns in some instances.

I horse that I literally just sold had long, flexy, sloping pasterns. It was somewhat hard to tell as a yearling what he'd grow into or out of, and they only seemed slightly long at the time, and no one was concerned. This horse will be lucky if he's sound past 7 or 8. I'll be shocked if he's alive at 10. While he's no longer mine, I fully regret ever buying him.

Sure mine was on the extreme end, but now I hyper aware and focused on pasterns/fetlocks.

You lot are so harsh and picky! Poor little sausage 🙄
Height wise, I’d first thought it’s not that bad an excuse. I’ve seen many NH horses that didn’t get very tall be sold on as they are going to cover less ground than the horses they will be competing against so it does make some sense, however if it was genuinely bred to jump it wouldn’t have been broken at 2.
Agree chifney pretty standard kit. Although we never used them just as a matter of course, as in most were let round at home in a head collar, for photos we almost always used a chifney as it looks better than a grubby head collar or work bridle. You can see the head more.

Poor boy. He looks so worried in the first photo. I hope someone gives him a kind home. I really dislike how racing churns these ponies out and then sells them off like the yellow sticker fruit and veg in the CoOp when they don't make the grade.

They shared that he’s now found a home :)
