Contemplating making an offer to buy unseen

That is how I feel and having seen one that looked perfect on videos but dropped it's shoulder in the school and took off twice on the road with the owner at the viewing for a ridden horse if wanting a safer type I would want to view especially as these types are often five figures which is a lot of money if they turn out not to be as expected. However the caveat to this is if buying from a reputable dealer who will take the horse back if not as described within 30 days. I would never contemplate buying from a private seller unseen.

I really hope it turns out well and you have a great summer.

With all the talk of rises in cases in laminitis and possible heatwaves from climate change I am quite glad to wait till Autumn.

One of your criteria is a safe hack there’s no way you can buy a working horse that needs to be safe unseen .
You really need to be a ride anything fix anything rider to do that.

I bought a riding pony sight unseen, she was cheap in covid, bombproof - no, has quirks- yes, would i ever sell her NEVER! just something i saw in her face/eye and video. Would i do it again, probably not for a riding one. (I don't bounce anymore)

When is the vetting, keep us updated and good luck.

Id buy unseen but I am an idiot 😂 my only request is that they do not crib, chew , bit , kick, windsuck and they are good on the ground anything else can be overcome 😂
I also think a horse takes a whiley to settle in so the horse you view isn’t necessarily what will come home. Buying unseen you don’t have that expectation of how it ‘should’ behave and you work with what’s in front of you.

ETA I certainly don’t mean that everyone should buy unseen. It is a risk but that is an example of one upside.

I must of been haft asleep when I read op thread . op if you want a safe hack definitely don’t buy unseen and you should be more open to different breeds but you should definitely be trying the horse even if ment that it took longer to find the horse or not the breed you wanted. If you want safe you definitely don’t go down the buying unseen route.

All - I don’t have a specific breed preference (think that’s a later poster comment). I have seen tons of videos, got confirmations confirmed on email, copies of vet history, verified through various sources, traced ownership back Ireland and will attend 5 stage vetting too. I do understand concerns but I am not able to find what I am looking for - it’s so hard and when they come up they are gone.

I think as Peglo has said that it is important to give the horse time to settle in, particularly if been in that home for a long time, but am sure you have that under control! Sounds like you have done lots of solid research so look forward to the pictures in due course.

Thanks and yes. I have a long list of things to tick off to make sure I have as smooth a transition as possible.

I probably would buy unseen. I've only seen two horses advertised that I've really wanted. I went to view the first one, she bronced and was an absolute handful but I wasn't leaving without her and we're still together 15 years later. The other, I still wish I'd just bought her unseen, but she was in Holland, I had an expired passport, I was advised it wasn't a good idea and my yard didn't have any vacancies. The one that "got away". I like riding, but I enjoy spending time with my horse and just doing yardy things, wasting hours pottering around getting not much done.

I have 🤣. Also bought him unseen 🤪 I used to like to live dangerously in my younger days.

I had a gut feel the horse would have a fixable physical issue and he did. He needed rest for a sore back and strengthening up with hill work, then he was fine.

So I went and saw the horse today - vetting gap and a mutual realisation that it would be better if we were both 100% sure. Horse is lovely - everything that was said - just a v nice person and I will now 🤞 the vetting goes to plan.

That's brilliant news. Good luck for the vetting!
