How many of you met your non-horsey oh and converted him?

Mine is surpassing all expectations and i am very pleased!
When we met he had never been near a horse and had no interest in starting - now he has made a complete u-turn :)

He helps out with tasks at the field, happily encourages me to buy horsey things, assists with catching/leading/grooming/rugging/bathing etc, walked 4 miles with me and my youngster to a local show and proudly held him whilst i yapped to friends! He has even suggested it would be a good idea to buy a new car with towing capabilities so then we could have a trailer too :D

And now he has booked himself some riding lessons! I wouldve been happy to teach him the basics myself but only have an unbroken youngster, a foal and a tiny welsh pony so nothing suitable but he gets an A* from me for all his efforts!!

Mine is converted too :) 4 years ago he had nothing to do with horses however now he doss everything except ride and now whats to get a youngster to show in hand until its ready to break very impressed :) its good to have an OH who is actually interested

I am seriously jealous of the pair of you, how I wish I didn't have to deal with the guilt. BUT.... how long have you been with them? The first summer I was with my OH I didn't pick a single poo - he did it all happily. In the two years that followed he probably went up to the farm about five times in total. He didn't get the bug and now I can see it was all related to the honeymoon period.

I hope yours continue!

I met my hubby when I was a teenager, he hated the horse I had then who knew it and chased hubby when I wasn't looking!

We have two little ponies now and hubby is quite happy to pat them and feed them but informs me that if we had another biggie he wouldn't go near it!

I have been with mine 4 and abit years billie1007 mine started not even coming to the farm and then as winter came the first year we were together he realised of he wanted to see me he would have to make an effort and it went from there really never pictured it happening to be truthful i was VERY shocked when he suggested showing the youngster

I've been with mine just over 3 years now billie1007 so think he's actually really interested!

All started beginning of last year when we went on hol to Egypt and went riding in the desert - albeit with him on a lead rein hehe!!
I had a crazy mare on loan at the time who wasn't safe for him to go near so he just watched at home.

With the 3 I own now his only complaint is that he doesn't have one of his own!!

Not converted, and don't want him to be either!! He'll come along to a competition occasionally, or if I need to pop to the yard and he happens to be with me, but other than that I'm actually quite glad he has no interest.

I haven't converted mine although he was petrified at first but now he might go on three odd plus but generally stays clear unless I need a hand, he is fab in an equine emergency. I have been with him nearly ten years and I have to say im pleased its
just my thing as it is great to have chill time with my horses and tell him about it later, and I am not willing to pretend I like football.either, I just go to the final type games. I know if he persued riding he would prob be better than me anyway!
I wonder what it must be like to have him into it as well, but I think would worry.he would get hurt

I converted mine. Got married 28 years ago and he wasn't horsey but liked animals and had a good way with them. He decided he wanted to learn to ride and we now have 4 horses and a place with land. He helps with looking after the horses, we hack out together and he does all the fencing etc.

I did a great job on mine! He loves animals and hadn't had the chance with horses. He now practically runs the yard. He's a diplomat in various yard wars too, where I just lose the plot. Didn't see that coming but couldn't do without him.:o

Mine loves the other animals we have and is very good with them.

But it's beyond me why after 16 years of marriage when I announced that I was getting a horse he said yes, but I think he agreed that it was something I needed to do while I was still young enough to enjoy it. It also means I no longer moan about being a hockey widow.

He comes up to see her and really enjoyed being taught how to handle her. I'm actually quite jealous because she lets him scratch her ears without having to be bribed with a polo. And gets dragged around endless tack shops and the odd show.

Thinking of getting him riding, and he's talking about lessons, but he needs to choose to do that himself.

When we first got together my OH expressed little interest in horses, although as time went on he fell more and more in love and now two years later he is a total star!
He can do all the jobs, and tends to muck out for me on a daily basis :o
He is also a fab competition groom, I am very lucky to have such a willing and long suffering OH! :D

Been with mine 6 & half years, totally non horsey when i met him, was quite scared of them to be honest lol, he now owns 3 & went on his first fun ride last weekend :)

Aww my BF was interested at first but got bored quickly, now he helps me with things when I need it as I am injured and will walk down with me only a little bit grudgingly! Today we bought some chaff so he carried it through the field to the shed, but the two horses he had to walk past followed us as they do (not even anything major just hungry!) he does get freaked out by any sudden trotting or heaven forbid cantering bless him!

One day he will ride :-)

Another converted one here, had nothing to do with horses, now will happily feed and rug if I'm not here, poo picks when I'm late at work, made me a field shelter/stable that is fab, now he is just starting on a brick stable block and school after that. Orders my feed for me, booked me YHL tickets. And sold his racing sidecar last year to fund a trailer and the stable project. I really am spoilt rotten. I can't believe how much he does and how much he likes them considering I don't think he had even seen a live one 4 years ago

No. Loves animals & gets that I am horsey, but no interest in getting in to them. He'll help in an emergency, but unless calling in on way past, really only goes up if daughter asks him to. When his child & mine were both pony mad toddlers he'd come to the yard a lot to help mind them. Don't actually want to convert him. Fair enough if he got interested himself, but would hate him to feel he had to for my sake.

My OH took upon himself to learn to ride and plus my old lad taught him a lot. I found his ideal horse before I got my next horse so I had to be patient for a few years until we moved to a place where we could have horses at home so could get a second horse. Although I do have to get help to keep his horse exercised through the week especially through the winter.

He is now also on the local RC committee with me and is a great help generally.

BTW we have been together over two decades so don't think it just a honeymoon phase!

The day after our first date my then bf helped me muck out a cattle shed by hand with forks so my horses could use it as a field shelter, it should have been done with a tractor. My dad even referred to it in his speech at our wedding 5 years later.

5 years on from then, we have built our own house, and my now hubby has fenced off two paddocks with lovely post and rail, and is in the process of building me a lovely new stable block.

He'll feed and do other stable chores for me if i'm busy ( he's a farmer too!) and when I had bigger horses would ride out. He's too big for my current one though. I do have to 'disguise' some of my horsey purchases though...!
