Hey all,

My horse injured his coronet band and hoof on 17th Jan '15. He was stabled at the time and I am not sure how he managed to do it but it seems like he got something like a nail caught above his hoof which ripped through the coronet band and hoof wall. It is a lot deeper than it first appears with quite a lot of damage behind the hoof wall.

He was very lame when it first happened (not putting weight on the leg at all for three days) and now is sound in walk but still lame on trot. The vet was out four or five times in January and he was treated with antibiotics/bute and dressed etc but the vet has not been out since (but it appears to not be healing too well so I am hoping to get her out again this week). He had 8 weeks of box rest and has been on field rest the last couple of weeks.

I have linked some photos dating from the week after it happened until last week. In the most recent photos you can see the strange growth from the coronet band. I just wanted to ask if anyone had seen anything like this before (or any similar injuries). Also opinions on how to treat coronet band injuries in the long term or any information about horses with similar injuries would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, my horse had exactly the same injury a while ago, basically you have hoof stem cells in the wrong place due the injury and what you have got it horn growing out of his coronet band. The likelihood is your horse will catch it and cause more damage to himself so it needs removing. My vet operated, under local anesthetic and removed that area. the first time he did it the growth came back as clearly not all the stem cells had been removed. He operated a second time at his own expense, as in his words 'he hadnt dont his job properly' And that worked, no evidence whatsoever of the original injury or subsequent operations. It wasnt a major operation, he wasnt even sedated, just a bit of local and I held him while the work was done. He was a totally laid back boy tho so we rarely if ever sedated for anything. And he adored that vet.

Nasty injury which has disrupted the coronary band corium and although healing well, the horn growth that it pointing upwards needs removing, the problem is will it keep doing this due to the corium issue? Get the vet back.

That is great to here, thanks. Ill get the vet out to get it sorted :)
How is your horse now, is he sound?

he was totally sound pre and post op, he was only unsound when he first did the injury which he managed to do in his stable , we have no idea how. I had to keep it bandaged for 24 hours post op, but it was so minor it never ever bothered him. And was in work before the op and a week after I was riding again. 100% successful.
