Just wondered if anyone else has to either hide or play down how much their horse actually costs them??!! Every time my OH asks how much something costs, i usually say £20, im sure he now thinks all lessons and back, teeth appointments etc are all charged at a standard £20!!!!!!

*grins* And the price of your happiness is what? And his. Ignorance (and marriage) is bliss :D

(But even my OH doesn't believe a set of shoes costs 20 quid...)

umm i hide around £200 per month out of my wages for horsey and still end up paying livery, shoes etc, the £200 is for extras that OH wont understand about such as feed supplements, new boots, headcollar, shavings (he thinks one bag will last the whole yr)
Think he knows though but doesnt say anything, it gets me out of his hair so can watch sky sports!

Mine knows down to the penny, or he would if he wanted to. We have a joint account all cheques are listed on the statement.

Anyway, I have to be honest because we claim the tax back on the farm, horse, conveniently being classed under agriculture not pets.

Dear God, no! I think mine would need to be resucitated if he knew how much the beasts REALLY cost! :D

Hell yeah!! But I'm pretty rubbish at it and have a habit of leaving receipts in the car or have to field questions when it comes to unveiling new stuff at shows ;)

Don't really know why I bother though - he doesn't mind and can't complain as he spends about twice what I do on his project car!! :D

I think its just something I've always done (shoes, clothes etc - he thinks they were all £20 :P) and I have no rational explanation - its my money, I work hard for it and I enjoy it.

No Way! I would never try and hide costs, it was a joint decision that we agreed I would get a horse, so OH gets dragged along now and again to help out (because he wants to!) and he knows about everything I buy for her :-D

A work colleague of my OH's whose daughter had just started riding lessons, knowing that I had horses asked him how much they were to keep. His reply.... "about £50 a month I think". If only he knew :p

No and I wouldnt. He loves getting involved and having an understanding of the time and money owning a horse takes and he respects that.

I no longer work and so he pays for everything. I may sometimes say..."oh Jamin needs this but will wait til next month when you get paid" but he is very easy going and often just says "if she needs it then get it"

I have the most supportive boyfriend ever. A far cry from the a*se I spent 5 years with! He is someone who I never told what I spent my OWN money on and often hid things just to save myself from the lecture he would give me!

HeHe - I posted a similar lighthearted post a few weeks ago and got some very pompous replies of the 'I would never lie to my OH about anything' variety! Wasn't what I was expecting at all. We often joke up at the yard about having to ambush the postie when a vets bill is due in. Someone did post a hilarious reply to my post and said that her horsey expenses were often noted as 'tesco' in her cheque book!

Excellent replies guys, i love it!!! Glad im not the only one. The tesco cover up in the cheque book is hilarious!!! I did warn mine when i got my little lorry that it would cost more now i was going out competing but i wouldnt dare tell him how much more!!!!

Hell yes I lie all the time I did last week I actually halved the price of a saddle last week, lol I work for my money and I contibute to the household bills. We have been married for 23 years and it,s worked so far with me telling porkies so why stop now.
I,m not about to commit saddle suicide by admitting how much tack from ebay really costS am I, however he knows how much the vet and farrier costs he is not that gullible.:eek:

God yes, I do pay for everything out of my own money but OH would have a fit if he knew what stuff really cost!...I tend to operate a bit of a sliding scale...Take off a few quid if its something cheep, and more if its something expensive! Hes training to be an accountant and is eagar to spreadsheet all my money so I'm having to be extra elusive hahaha :-)

I have found it best to tell the staff in the shop to bin the reciept (always pay cash!! hides more evidence of pointless spending) you then dont have to worry about reciepts being found!!
It always makes me have a chuckle to myself when my husband is like "WOW that bag of feed has lasted well" little does he know i have bought a extra 2 in the time he thinks!!! tee hee hee!!

haha yeah right! the last ar*e to attach himself had a nack of taking the money out of my purse/persuading me to wait till next week or whatever and buy him something or lend it to him for something... what a load of sh*t! next time will pick one that can fend for himself and isnt a lying stealing ****!

I will admit to knocking money off my impulse tack shop buys and my friend who runs the tack shop now knows if he is with me to just run my card through and not announce how much it comes too.

But generally as he hangs around the yard so much he tends to know the real prices.

On the 10th July we have the Western Saddler coming out for fit Vardi (and me!) for our own Western Saddle. I am currently using my trainers kit so we need Saddle, Pad, Bridle, Bit you get the picture....OH wants to be there as "it will be intereesting" I have done my best to prepare him but fear it will not be enough

How exciting! You can tell him quite truthfully that western gear DOES cost a bit more, but it lasts forever, and takes very little looking after compared to English gear, so you'll be saving time AND money ;)

I pay for a lot - insurance, farrier, tack, lessons, clothing, entries - out of my own money, but OH/joint a/c pays for feed, vet, keep and the cost of keeping vehicle and trailer on the road, so he has a pretty good idea of how much it costs.

Last year I bought my horse a new bridle, which was something I had wanted to do for ages, and then had a guilty pang and decided I should buy OH a new jacket as his was looking past its best. Not sure which cost the most!

Also my daughter wanted a new dress and I expressed shock at the price. "If it was a new rug for your horse you would get it." (true!) so she got the dress!

Mine knows how much the livery is per horse per week, and he knows how much shoes are, and he knows how much hay, haylage, shavings etc is. But I still don;t think he has a clue!!

Saying that, our joint account pays the bills, we put the same amount in each and do what we want with the rest of our money.

He did say the other day that he mioght get Sky (we stopped having it whenwe bought our house) and I was about to launch into 'what a waste of money......when I remembered he only had the cheap package before and I couldn't feed one horse for that a month!!

So I kept quiet.

He is very good though and never questions me on what I spend, nor do I him.

I love this post :D

I am pretty sure every horsey person plays down the cost of owning a horse to some extent.

My OH has just gotten to the stage where he rolls his eyes - he knows how much my ponies mean to me and the enjoyment I get out of it.

If they really start to winge a good angle to take is to start talking about how much their beer/golf/rugby/shooting/electronic gadgets set them back...

I pay for it all myself anyway :)

Not so much OH.. i just dont tell him. But my dad!! "Where have you got that from?!" "that?! ive had it aaaaaaaaaaaaagessss!" I think if he knew what my livery bills were, he'd need sedating. :p

OH is horsey so no chance, good job I'm the main breadwinner I suppose.

But as for funny stories about deceiving men about what things cost, when I got married I went dress shopping with my mum, we left the house to my dad calling

"don't let her spend more than £100 on a dress"

My mum replied "I spent more than that on mine in 1973" and ran FAST before he got up off the floor and decided that I should run away to gretna!

Definately yes, he would be horrified if he really knew. I too have been questioned by other men in front of my OH as to the cost of keeping horses when their wife or kids are requesting horses. To date I have always managed to skirt around the subject and not had to come up with an actual figure but a phrase like 'happy wife means a happy life' normally pops up somewhere!
