Hi all,

As the title says really ... How much would it roughly cost to replace a new tree?

A friend of a friend is actually giving away an old dressage saddle (not too sure on the make yet as i've only just emailed her) and its tree is broken so she has already bought a new one - hence why she is giving it away.

I just wondered if anyone had any experiences of replacing a broken one and how much it is? With her giving it away I obviously don't mind paying a little bit extra to get a new one fitted. It was originally hand made by a saddler in kenilworth so I might give him a call tomorrow.

But any opinions are more than welcome :)

I had to replace a tree in one of my old saddles. The fee to just put the new tree in was about £130 or so, that included a full re-flock etc. But I had to obtain and supply the tree itself as an additional cost - would have been cheaper to find a 2nd hand saddle in the end!

Worth calling the maker though - in my case it was an obscure model so getting the replacement tree was difficult.
 
In all honesty its not worth the hastle...
The work involved is huge- stripping the entire saddle back and finding and fitting another tree the same, difficult especially if an older one.
Probably will need new webbing and girth straps too
The costs could really mount up.
I'd only consider it if it was a very expensive saddle to start with and I really liked it!
 
I've done this with an Ideal hunt saddle. It took a little longer as it was big, 18.5". £350 all in. It was worth it for me, as I love the saddle.
 
I bought a Black Country saddle off ebay for £17 with a broken tree. Before I bought it I rang Black Country to ask whether they can replace their trees and was quoted £290 just before Christmas. I forgot to ask whether this included VAT though :o

As it turned out, the saddle was too long for my boy's back so it got passed on to a friend who is a Saddle Company fitter and he's going to have an adjustable SC tree put into it. Will mean that the saddle ends up having a more versatile life anyway :)

The Saddle Company will also replace trees.... and they're adjustable.
 
it cost 450 for my ryder saddle as I had to send it to them as they don't let other ppl replace their trees?? saddle was insured - It wouldn't have been worth it if it hadn't been.
 
Unless it's otherwise a really good saddle, I think I'd just look for a sound second hand one.

£300? :eek: Blimey, thought forking out £155 to have the Cair panels in my Bates replaced was expensive!
 
Sis cracked the head of it so off it went to Albion.. It's not so bad considering the saddle cost me over £2k :o

Fairy nuff. Bit different if your saddle is worth a few quid to start.

Op, seems like your best bet would be to find out what the saddle is and how old it is, have a hunt round for similar and try to work out the value of a sound saddle of that type. Then see if it's worth forking out for a new tree or finding a good second hand example.
