Could a good dealer be my best bet for my next horse?

My next horse is going to be an angel. When I worked out my wish list it boiled down to the fact I basically want a safe PN BE horse or equivalent I think- something I can get on and start cracking on with doing all sorts without worrying about sly stops/tanking off/throwing me off... few excited bucks ok but I really can't be arsed with anything more. 8-12yo ideally. Must be safe to hunt and have brakes (stronger bits/nosebands fine so long as horse is responsive in them). Must be viceless and at least 16.1hh... looks/type don't matter so long as it is up to the job.

I'll go anywhere in the country to find my next one hence wondering if there are any fab dealers out there who can a) be trusted, and b) come up with the goods.

Seen some perfect sounding ones on horsemart between but not sure if I can be bothered to make another mistake with a dodgy private seller...

Thoughts? All a bit pie in the sky right now anyway as still need to sell Sam, recover from broken leg AND possibly find new job lol

QR: Well, I would seriously recommend buying from a reputable dealer. I have brought both mine from dealers; one really is worth his weight in gold; the other is a bit blonde, (but TBH that is my fault from having a green horse at such a young age.) I also, work for the dealer I brought them off; and to them reputation is absolutly everything, and would never intentionally sell anything dodgy!

I cant really recommend them to you though, as we never have anything above the age of 4, so not really what your looking for; but I would recommend buying from a dealer!

I would look at an IDxTB... I think that mix would suit you very well from what you have just said. I really like the combination (that is what Hannah is) and although she can be very hot headed, she is an absolute angel once you know how to deal with the paddys and I wouldn't swap her for the world.

in my experience, then yes. can send you the details of who I got Pidge from if you are seriously interested. He gets most from Ireland and specialises in safe sensible horses. I know Pidge can be keen but he is 100% safe and has given me back my confidence jumping. I would second the ISH not that I'm biased in any way

but you have the nice mix of TB for speed etc and then the sensibleness of the ID IMO. I would definately have another from my dealer and definately have another ISH.

Would love an IDxTB- whas what I was looking for when I bought Sam actually. I'm really not fussed about what type it is, could be a full ID or IDxCob or another TB so long as it's temperament/attitude/experience fit the bill.

I don't really know any dealers to be honest, apart from ones I would definitely not recommend to you

I think a dealer is good because you can take them on a trial period... how about looking for something to loan with view ro buy, although i do sometimes find these can be problem horses.

I think there a lot of honest people out there selling their horses, so I wouldn't just focus on dealers. I would look at a few of each if it was me. You never know, you could pass up on your perfect horse by ruling out private sellers

Have you found Sam a home? How is your leg BTW?

I don't know any good dealers either lol! But I know they are out there.

My instructor is selling Sam for me, once the hunting season finishes she is going to do a few weeks schooling, we'll get some good pics and advertise him. She'll sort it all out for a cut of his selling price. Suits me well as be a while before I'm back in the saddle.

Took trip out of the house today on my crutches, longest one yet (went to IKEA... was nearly in tears by the time I got through the labyrinth to find the picture frames I went to get

)... more than 10 mins hopping about and my knee KILLS and I turn white.

Fine at home though, doesn't even hurt

Bit of a wake up call in IKEA though...

Oh honey, I am sure you will start to find things easier soon. It just needs some more chance to heal... and until then you can start trawling the pages of Horse Quest to see what is out there. I love pony shopping, it makes me so excited, even when I am helping someone else. I couldn't believe it when I could do it again for a loan horse in October... I didn't really do much when I bought Hannah, someone knew of her.

You can always have Grace in September...

I've just bought my horse off a dealer. He buys horses that his daughters will enjoy riding and they are aimed at Amateurs. They are also reasonably priced. I know a few people who have had one off him and he describes them very honestly. Theres no gauranntee he'll have what you want but he is worth phoning

Well, I have not decided yet...

She is on loan to me until the end of September and then I either sell her on behalf of the owner (we split any additional value I have added 50:50) or I buy her for the original price of £2,500. I just have to decide whether I can cope exercising two (Han and Grace) and having a foal living out too.

I am hoping that things might be looking up a bit more then for hubby and I and we can start looking at buying some land and then I can keep all three

But I have to admit, I would be heart broken having to sell Grace now. I genuinely think she could be my top hat and tails horse!!!

I brought my Mouse of a dealer, she brings over 1 horse and 1 pony from Ireland to sell
the insurance company shearwater have just brought a horse off her too, really lovely woman located in Hampshire
I can't locate her number at the moment, but i can't fault Mouse at all, she is exactly what i wanted

Mike Jones Two Mills Sports Horses on The Wirral has a good reputation around here - has some very nice horses in all the time. Depends on what you want to spend though. You could be looking at upwards of £6k for what you are describing.
