I used play on kenzos idea and touched the hot wire to the metal mesh fencing. No sparking or clicking to speak of. Deffo not hot.
 
Oh I see, I had visions of you forcing small child to hold a passing hen up to the fence to see if the gave off sparks. Your idea is much more sensible, but not as much fun

Run a ground wire around your field, parallel to your live wire (placed about 4 inches below your live wire). Your original ground is no longer effective therefore you need to bypass that ground and by doing the above, you will.

The new ground wire needs to be attached to your ground terminal on your energiser. The horse has to touch both wires to be zapped, which is why you place them only 4 inches apart.

By the way, you do not need to use insulators for the ground wire; staples are perfectly adequate and will save you a bit of money and time.
