Could you condition score this horse for me please? The RSPCA...

I dont really think that the ins and outs of the whole thing matter as long as the horse is seen by someone who knows what they are talking about and takes appropiate action. It may or may not be a welfare case, either way no horse should be looking like that.

And dont start me on the RSPCA, I hate them for a past time :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I called RSPCA for horse in very poor state as pictured, I took horse in done bloods, fed up etc.. Had slight worm damage they told me cant do anything to ex owner as By lay ppl don't have to worm there horses!!!! But they did come out took pic & body scored as 2 would be a 1 but couldn't as he was still alive wtf!!!!!... Says it all.

From that pic Id condition score that as a 1. The RSPCA need disbanding, they are NOT acting in the interests of animals they are acting in the interests of POLITICS. They spend MILLIONS of pounds of donations on hi tech office buildings, fat cat executive pay and needless legal cases. So when it comes down to it there is a lack of money for the needy cases and a TOTAL LACK OF KNOWLEDGE where horses and other large animals are concerned.

I feel they should cease to exist and charities in their own field such as WHW and The canine defence in the case of dogs etc should be given the powers to start a prosecution if cruelty is found.

I watch animal cops all the time and have seen many cases like this some worst They have a grading system and going by the American score i would say 1 to 1 1/2

as a former RSPCA Inspector of many years, i would have had the vet down like a shot to this pony. Tbh, it all depends on the Inspector on the day - I would be contacting the Chief Inspector and asking why this has been overlooked.

The belly will be WORMS, and most likely the teeth are bad as well. Yes, i would have been looking to take a case on this. :(

If the RSPCA is dsibanded, who the hell will take on the private prosecutions at HUGE expense, for starving dogs, etc ? You have absolutely NO IDEA what goes on behind the scenes, what Inspectors have to do for a living. And if people stopped overbreeding cats, dogs and horses, the situation would not be nearly so bad. Hunting wild animals is ILLEGAL - FGS, get a grip.

Where does it say it had been this thin since the summer?

A few pages back.

Moomin1, Angelish, FionaM12 - it is just these kinds of attitudes that mean nothing gets done about these welfare cases.

I don't care what angle the photograph was taken from, it is obvious to anyone with half a brain that the horse is emaciated.

OP has anyone spoken to the owner?

You know what, when I hear people on this forum arguing the toss about whether a horse is emaciated or not and saying stuff like 'it's the angle of the photograph' etc. It really makes me wonder what state their own horses are in. Just telling it like it is...

You've got to wonder, I suppose. I looked at the picture on my phone last night and the first words out of my mouth are unrepeatable. If I can see emaciation on a tiny screen........................:o

How ridiculous to say that this horse is anything but emaciated - BETTER GO TO SPECSAVERS!!
Hope help arrives for this horse before it is too late :(

Omg! Just seen the photo and my blood ran cold, shocking! I didn't expect it to look that bad!

Will be following this thread to hopefully hear that something has been done, very soon I hope, I'm amazed the horse is still standing!

Well done OP, luckily for the horse they might now have a chance.

Flipping heck! The horse is a condition score 1. Emaciated. You don't need different camera angles and to see the rest of the horse to know that. The only time I would find it acceptable to see horse so thin that he had to reabsorb his own muscles in order to be able to provide enough energy to his body to live[\I] would be if he were receiving serious vet attention and/or had been removed from a neglected welfare situation. This isn't just muscle wastage from not being in work or from old age, something is very wrong here.

A thing similar to this happened to me years ago.
Pony was over the lane from mine, it wasn't until I decided to take the rug off one day that I realised how bad he was. Called RSPCA who said that because he had access to grazing and water there was nothing they could do (wrong).
Tried to trace the owner who appeared to have moved away and left the pony some months before, so I just moved him onto our land and called the vet and dentist.....probably not what you should do but I couldn't watch it any longer and felt that there was no help available.
His teeth were almost beyond repair but dentist and vet combined did their best and made him comfortable.
He spent the rest if his days with us, eating soaked high fibre cubes, and was a different pony within 3 months :)
He lived another 5 happy years until he went down one day and was PTS.

Now he lived just next door to us and was probably looking poor fora long time before I finally went and took his rug off.
The point I'm trying to make to all those saying its the OPs friends fault is that you just DON'T go into other people's fields and start taking the rugs off and inspecting their horses unless you suspect something may be wrong.

I can't imagine that those criticising would have trespassed and interfered before there was a problem.
If its not your horse is probably just a horse grazing in a field to you. You don't go and start inspecting people's horses until you realise that there's an actual problem.

Are some people suggesting that the person should have trespassed, cut the rug off and called whw or someone BEFORE the horse got thin???

Anyone can see that horse needs help.

Having read the various RSPCA-bashing posts, I'm wondering whether a huge part of the problem is that the inspectors aren't sufficently trained to recognise when a horse is really in trouble. Let's face it - most of us on here can tell whether a horse with a fat belly is fat (all over) or looks wormy. But to a non-horsey inspector it's harder to tell. Likewise - if a horse has access to grass and water (basic needs) then it ticks the boxes for being "ok". My horses will eat sometimes eat tree branches and other things despite being surrounded by grass.
Maybe a more constructive use of time might be for some sort of assessment of the training needs of inspectors. Are they trained to remove rugs (an easy feat for all of us but a scary and potentially hazardous action for someone who's not "horsey" and doesn't know/understand rugs and horses). And are they even allowed to interfere in that way?

For the record - I do support the RSPCA. I've never (luckily) had any dealings with them though and my support is more based on the work they do for small and wild animals than for horses.

Wagtail, I asked where it said the horse had been this thin since summer. It hadn't, in fact the OP said:

I hasten to add that I did not say that the horse was thin since summer

I did not at any point say the horse doesn't look very, very thin. I just said we need more information before knowing why this could be and whether anything's being done about it.

I have spent much of my life helping animals in distress (including times when the rest of the local equestrian community refused to get involved) and am hurt by your conclusion that I contribute to "nothing being done about welfare cases" not to mention the suggestion I have less than half a brain.

These threads get heated and things are taken out of context. Could the personal insults stop now please?
