Could you remove a shoe?

Just wondered how many of you can remove your horses shoe should you have to? My farrier gave me a lesson (free of charge) on how to remove a shoe and says that all owners should be able to do it and have basic equipment to do it properly. So glad he did, have had to remove 2x twisted shoes already, mind you it is not easy and I was puffing when I finally got them off and I needed help holding the leg up as I'm such a weed!
 
I know how to do it and have the tools, but it is bloomin' hard work so much better to get hubby to do it

I've never been shown how to do it, Flash is very good at taking his off himself. Would like to learn tho, think it's an important thing to be able to do in an emergency!
 
I've removed shoes in the past, never from my own horse thought. There is a knack to it but even then you need a fair amount of strength. I don't have my own tools at the moment but have access to them on the yard.
 
Yes I can, and absolutely think that every horse owner should be able to.
The tools (buffer, shoe puller and hammer!) aren't expensive at all, you can get them from Robinsons/DH etc, or your farrier might have some old ones hanging around that he'll give to you if you ask him nicely enough.
If I'm lucky and OH has his kit lying around I even get to wear proper chaps!

Yes, I was taught to at college, and have to occassionally. Although I have to agree, it's darn hard work

I had to take Hemir's front ones off in an emergency this week as his feet started to crack, this has never happened and only after 6 weeks (so he wasn't due), i took them off with the help of my dad and his tools (not fantastic as not ment for the job!) went ot see a different farrier, who is better than our other one, and he said we had done a good job...so was very pleased

He doesn't have shoes on his back feet and they are in much better condition..so thought we might try and go barefoot for a while...

accoring to the farriers association its only illegal to put shoes on if not qualified.... i had this argument ages ago - as a farrier (without my agreement) trimmed my Lammi ponys feet so far back he was crippled... they wont do a thing.
 
Hubby can, and has several times. I have watched but not sure i could do it, but non of mine have ever been shod.
