some of you may have followed the problems i have been having with my pony twiggy. To cut a long story short she changed from utter sweetie to dangerous rearer in the space of 3 months. It was so bad that the last time I tried to ride her she reared vertically twice and I had to throw myself off.

We thought we had tried everything; edinburgh and glasgow vet schools couldnt find anything wrong with her.

As a last resort we tried putting her on regumate to see if it made a difference..

And oh my god she is a changed pony! No longer moody to tack up and today i lent over her on the lunge. A few weeks ago we tried this and the immediate reaction was ears back and buck, but today she was perfectly happy and i even sat up properly and had a few steps of trot!! She behaved beautifully and didnt feel uncomfortable at all.

If it continues to work this well i think we will have her ovaries taken out which should solve the problem once and for all.

Sorry but i am just over the moon, i knew it wasnt time to give up on her yet.

(hope i havent jinxed it by posting too soon!)

Thats great news am really pleased for you. Please, however, think carefully before you neuter her, it could have a long term impact on her future options if you ever hit a problem and she can no longer be ridden. why not talk to your vet about inserting a marble first??

Baggyb, WHY would you ever breed from a horse that is a nutter when not on regumate? Bloody hell....

DaisyDoll, your post has convinced me to try the moody mare on regumate. xxxx

yes we have had a long think, but our vet jas told us that often a marble isnt very effective, and tbh i would not like to be in the position of selling her and knowing that she may not always be totally safe. For my peace of mind we have decided that taking them out is the way to go.

I would definetely give it a try, bloody expensive though!!xx

Good to hear such an improvement thats why I won't touch a mare :p

Glad to hear you don't want to breed from a mare like her (I mean this in the nicest possible way) I'm just so fed up of people breeding off unsuitable animals because they can, its good to know some people have sense :D

I used it on my last horse and it worked a treat. I'm glad its going well for you so far.

Have you looked in to whether you can get your insurance to pay for it? I know it will only be for the first year but that will save you about £500 won't it? If it was prescribed by your vet you should be able to put in a claim.
