Crank Nosebands - What do they do? And an Ebay question...

I won a bridle on Ebay which arrived yesterday. In the description it said it was a snaffle bridle so I assumed it would have a normal cavesson (with flash) nose band but it doesn't, it has a Crank one.

I have never used one before so don't know how different they are to cavessons.

My horse HATES anything that restricts him, I can't ride him in a flash or Grackle (which he need) as it causes him to rear and reverse at 100mph so I tend to just ride him with a cavesson done up quite loosely. Is a crank restricting?


The ebay question - Do you think I should complain to the seller? The bridle was very cheap and I am please with it in general (for the price I paid I didn't expect it to be so nice) but if I can't use the crank I'm going to have to buy a new noseband. Would it be fair to ask for a partial refund or shall I just accept that it's the risk you take when buying of ebay?
 
A crank can winch the mouth closed without the need for a flash if done up tightly. If done up losely I believe its just like a basic cavesson.
 
The picture is taken head on so it's very hard to see that it is a crank, looking closely at it you still can't tell.

I really didn't pay much for it so I would feel bad complaining but it's not as described. They are selling quite a few of these bridles so I feel I need to point it out to them.
 
you dont have to fasten the crank on its tightest hole, i dont see why you cant use it but fasten it loosely like the cavesson you use normally

I'd point it out to them and if you can use the bridle (which you can, a crank won't restrict if you don't tighten it) then no need to seek a refund.
 
They are padded usually, andif you use it at a normal tightness it will do nothing other than look pretty.

I personally muych prefer crank nosebands,

just do it up to the same tightness you do up a cavesson??

i prefer them as they have the padding around the back of the buckle but i never do mine up tightly.
 
If it is a snaffle bridle (i.e. only one set of cheek pieces) and it didn't specifically state the type of noseband in the advert then I don't really see what you can complain about.

Personally I prefer the cranks as they normally have the extra padding under the chin. As already said above - if you don't do it up tight it won't be any different to a regular cavesson.
 
Was this the exact bridle / advert that you bought?

If so, then I would say the picture has a cavesson noseband. I would say something to the seller as it is 'not accurately described'.

It depends how much slack / adjustment there is in the crank noseband as they are designed to be tightly fastened. You can only tell this by trying it on the horse. If there's not enough slack then it is quite probable that your horse won't get on with it.

I would try to return / exchange for a different bridle.

I do share your sympathy as I've been looking for a plain cavesson bridle - but all appear to have crank (yuk!) nosebands now

Yes that's the exact one except mine was a Full size, not X full.

The picture does look like a cavesson as you can see the buckle in the middle which I don't think you would be able to see if it was a crank.


Will try it on Charlie tomorrow and see how much slack there is.
 
Only £10.50 plus postage, so not much to quibble over really

IF I do have to buy another noseband though (if not enough slack on the crank) it will probably cost more then the bridle did!
 
Just pick up a second hand noseband on ebay! They don't go for much. This will be easy if the bridle is black, but more difficult if it's brown as you will need to try to match the colour!
 
you may find he doesnt need as much slack in the crank as he did in the standard cavesson, as there is the pad on the crank to protect the buckle, which most normal cavessons dont have so the buckle presses directly against the face.

my youngster prefers the crank on his dressage bridle to be adjusted just snug, so it cant flap but his jumping bridle isnt a crank, and the buckle is against his face so he will only tolerate it either flapping in the wind loose or with a gel pad underneath and snugger(his preferance).

(and im not saying yank it tight, just that he might be ok with it normal tight as opposed to loose!)
