My mum was walking the dogs the other day in the same place we always do. On the river bank all the dogs (3 terriers and GSP) were obsessing about something in a bush and then Willow the border terrier started making her awful "red mist" noise. :( Mum couldn't get in bush to get her out and couldn't understand what it could be, then eventually the badger ran out, Willow attached! Mum managed to get hold of her tail so she had to let go and the Badger got away, hopefully he/she is ok. Non of the others were interested in tackling it! Willow had a lot of blood on her and was colarless, he has some superficial wounds on her neck and wasn't lame at the time but the day after had a poorly paw... She's been to the vets and got some anti biotics etc. so hopefully she'll be ok too.

A couple of question:

1 - since when do badgers hang out on river banks in the middle of the day??
2 - does anyone else have a mega keen terrier like this and is there anyway to curb their killer instinct? She's great with other dogs and people but is just a crazy small and large furry animal muncher!!

Oh yes I know, bless her, I admire her courage!! Sounds like she was winning too :o!! We've got two smaller terriers and luckily they didn't join in other than backing up Willow, they wouldn't have stood a chance!

The vet was quite snotty with us and I wondered if she thought that we shouldn't be letting our dog fight with a badger, but you really don't get much choice in the matter! She's normally quite chilled and a good girl, but once she gets the red mist - that's it!

Maybe the badger was not well hence its positioning. Would not of fancied the terrier's chances if the badger had really had a go.

Ooh blimey! Glad Willow is ok!
I'm always scared of coming across badgers as Tink is daft and wouldn't back down, but I don't fancy her chances against one!

Cwor! I know the noise you are on about, the bitch makes it when she gets really over the top with a toy. It's an insane noise!

Hmm I would say ill/damaged badger and no, I don't think you ever curb that - especially when they have "had a taste". Its just management after that really.

Glas she's ok!

Yes maybe he/she was sick, didn’t think of that, perhaps a good job or we might have had a dead dog!! I was thinking that maybe she might calm down now she’s actually been hurt, but I won’t hold my breath!

A Badger out in the middle of the day is not normal behaviour and it is quite likely that it was unwell, Just hope for your dogs sake it didn't have TB! Badgers can be savage and you could have come out of it with as hefty vets bill so glad your dog is ok!

Does it pass onto dogs like that though?

It could if the badger had a big pussy TB absess! TB is generally transmitted through ingestion, inhalation, faeces, saliva, bite wounds and urine. Personally I know which I would rather keep safe and thats my dogs - sorry wandering onto thoughts of potential badger cull which is probably too political for this post! ;)

The vet was possibly funny with you because I think they probably have to view all injuries inflicted by badgers as possibly being the result of badger digging which is of course illegal. Not suggesting you were doing that of course, I remember I was walking with a friend and our 2 GSDs put up a badger, luckily they didn't get close enough to be injured but until we checked them over we were worried sick that if they had needed to go to a vet we could have been in serious trouble for "letting" them attack a badger.

Yes I thought that, not that we were doing anything of the sort, but she is a scruffy little thing so maybe the vet thought we looked a bit dodge! At the end of the day though we were a customer so I think the least people can do is be polite! She wasn't very nice with the dog either... maybe she thought she was evil as well as her owners! ;)

Pffrt How not nice was she? I'd have had a few short words for any vet who isn't professional enough to split personal feelings from their job...

She wasn't horrible or anything just a bit abrupt/rude with us and then she said she had to take Willow in the back to clean her wounds and she just kinda dragged her off - no stroke or pat on the head and didn't talk to her or anything.. just a bit rude to the dog as well I guess.

Oh well, maybe we'll take our custom elsewhere in future!
