After 4 years of waiting, the stable I wanted on my yard is available and it comes with its own tackroom. It is a bog standard 12x12 stable with the tack room added onto the side - size wise it runs the length of the stable and I would say it is about 1.5-2m wide. So just for a bit of fun (and because I have lost all motivation to work!) I wondered if anyone could share some creative tack room storage ideas or things that you have in your tackrooms. I have had to share a space with 2 others for the last 4 years so I am very excited as you can tell. I will still share the feed room so don't need to have feed in there and I have a normal sized tack locker to go in but other than that I am open to suggestions!

see through plastic boxes with lids for spare stuff and seasonal things, get several and you can catagorise one for tack cleaning things, another for shampoos and plaiting bands, another for lotions ans potions and so on. easy to lift and carry outside so you are not going along the yard with armfuls of things. And shelving, adjustable ,on that metal racking stuff then you can fit lots of things on it.

I have big metal cabinets that are great for keeping things tidy and dust free. mine are about 6 foot tall. they are expensive new but pop up on ebay now and then, i got 2 for £60 which are super strong and rodent proof. Mine seem to be ex MOD but previous yard we just had office ones - they weren't as tough but equally useful.

Shelving and lots of it! If you don't want to put anything permanent up there are plenty of cheap free standing shelving units you can buy from a DIY store.

I h ave an old upright freezer which I use the top half to store boots (horse) in the wire pull out drawers and the bottom half to store saddle cloths (I took the wire pull out drawers out).

I also have some plastic drawer units for storing odd bits and pieces and my medical (horse and human) items.

I have similar in both of my stables, little tack rooms that are about 1.5m wide, at the back and running the width of the stables, accessed via doors within the stables.
I use them to store bags of bedding, in use rugs, grooming supplies and other bits and bobs related to that particular horse.
One has:
4 drawer tall metal filing cabinet
A tall wooden locker
Large square garden storage box

Other has:
Wooden Pallet for storing bags of bedding on
Tall wooden 5 drawer cabinet
3 Drawer Pedestal
Long outdoor storage trunk

I also have a small barn with contains the rest of my stuff:
Roll Fronted Cabinet
Large Outdoor Storage Chest
Smaller outdoor storage chest
3 Drawer Pedestal
DIY shelves from wood offcuts and metal brackets
Feed bins

I'm lucky in that my office was having a refurnishing flurry not long after I moved into the yard, so I was able to grab a bunch of old office furniture for storage (The items in italics). The most useful so far has to be the roll fronted cabinet, I can store loads in there and keep it clean, dry and dust free. The good thing with wood is that it's easy to add locks to it all, just screw a hasp and staple on for a padlock and you're done. I've only just got the locker up there, as up until recently I was using it at home, but I've ordered a saddle rack to install in there, so I can have a DIY tack locker :)

I use large old chest freezers to keep rugs in to stop the rats chewing them. I used to use old Wheely bins but they were a pain to get the rugs out of (the one you'd want would always be the one at the bottom)

Thanks all, some great ideas here! I was thinking about plastic drawers but advised against them by other liveries as the mice can get in them so think either wood/metal or more boxes might be a good idea. I am going to have proper look inside once all of the rubbish out of there (seems to have become a dumping ground for more than one person who has now left!). My dream is to have a little cupboard to hang all of my numnahs up in on little trouser coat hangers - HOW SAD!

Use as much space as you can - including the height. Use the walls - put hooks up for hats, coats, hi-viz, headcollars etc. to keep things off the floor. Some boot brackets are good if you keep a spare pair of wellies or your riding boots there.
Use the back of the door too - a door tidy for little things like pulling combs, scissors, sponges etc is useful.
A length of rope along one wall for rosettes is also nice. A garden storage box is great for rugs and an old filing cabinet for bits and bobs like boots (horse), spare bits of leather work, chaps etc .
I'd invest in a good strong tack locker if you plan on keeping your tack there.
Ikea stackable boxes with angled lids at the front are great for feed as you can keep a lot in a small space and use the height rather than floor space.

My neighbor had the most beautiful little tack room (it was about 2m, so very small) she had a clothes rail which all of her saddle pads were hung on hangers (in color order) underneath that she had shelves for all her many bandages, boots, veils ect. She made her own MDF food storage box. There was a horse head (metal, like a hunter trophy head) on the back of the door for hanging coats ect. Lots of hooks and shelves, it felt like a shop.
