Cross country

boots with electrical tape around to secure, you can easily get it off in an emergancy but holds them on very well, and over reach boots

I didnt listen to my own advice and one of my boots was hanging off by the time I got home, had photographer screaming at me 2 jumps from home "your boot is coming off"
I wasnt going to stop hope thy didnt think bad of me it was my first xc course we had ever done and wanted to finish clear (and we got placed yey)

dont like bandages for xc ooohh nooo ive got images of it coming undone and trailing behind you.

Good luck xx

i use Prolites front and back and no-turn over reach boots in front.

all done up with electric tape over the top.

never use bandages as they need to be stitched over and also get very heavy when wet.
they also offer no strike protection for the tendon.

For a XC ride, I wouldnt go out and buy any expensive XC boots... however, if you have any form of tendon boots, I would use those infront as opposed to brushing boots

They offer more tendon protection. Brushing boots behind are fine.

electric tape goes over all of the fastenings.

for my prolites it goes about 5 times around the leg from top to bottom.

for overreach boots, i tape round twice.

ooo I've never taped overreach boots! interesting!

Point with the tape - don't over do it in terms of tighteness - i.e. they shouldn't be a point of pressure. although i realise with boots you can't really tighten it tighter than the boot itself - if that makes sense!
and you can get electrical tape in all sorts of colours to match you XC colours! i deff vouch for not having super duper expensive ones - as I'd rather have boots which are good but can be replaced when damaged - I had a lovely pair of westropps and got all overally precious about them about how good they looked - first trip out - they did their job and took a knock from the fence which ripped them open, sad as boots now ruined, but yay for horse not being damaged at all

whoop! yay for boots!

Do NOT use tendon boots going cross country - the whole point of tendon boots is that if a horse showjumps and hits it yourself with a tendon boot - it will feel it/be more careful - you can't take the same approach with fixed solid fences!! you will never ever see anyone going XC with tendon boots at any reasonably big event - and tbh, I can't think I have ever seen this at RC either.

For ordinary XC a decent set of brushing boots and overreach will do - taping is a good idea as things will slip!. I did invest in "proper" XC boots when I was going affiliated and then I felt justified. I have quite happily used bandages before - they went over what looked like a sort of shinguard and offered fantastic protection. Properly fitted and taped on meant I never had a problem with waterlogged bandages - however, this was a bit more fiddly, so I invested when I could and the boots proved their worth many times over.

TBH I am torn - half between - buy the best you can afford because after all - its a pretty important part of a horse - and the other half saying boots can sometimes incumber a horse and cause more problems than they solve.

If I had to make a choice though - I'd go out and buy either prolite or NEW cross country boots.
