Crufts 2026 roll call

The picture of the BoB dobermann's mouth that is circulating on FB is, erm, interesting. Particularly for a dog that has been used to sire 32 litters. From the livestream:

I know this dog well. He is the sire of our puppy bitch who took BPIB at crufts. He has full and complete dentition.

Perhaps they should think about the way they are shown in that case, because it's really not doing the reputation of the breed any good.

They've always been shown in a three-point stack, it's not new.

If anyone has ever read the revised edition of The Complete German Shepherd by Nem and Percy Elliot, which itself is over 40 years old, the dog on the front (in a three point stack) was the first champion made up by the breeder of the 2026 BOB. He also imported some of the most influential modern bloodlines to the UK from Germany. The current 'high line' is not for me personally, but I am pleased to see that the breed in the UK (mostly) evolved away from the dogs strung up behind the ears on thin chains, with swan necks, concave backlines, soft ears, washed-out colour, terrible weak temperaments and rampant epilepsy, among other issues.

My Lab is also campaigning to be allowed to get that fat. I didn’t watch it this year but I imagine there was the same commentary about how these are working breeds, bred to work all day in the field blah blah blah while an obese dog waddles around the ring.
I’d expect a show lines dog to be heavier set, but I agree, that dog was obese.
I think in recent years people have just got too used to overweight dogs and it's become the norm; most dogs I see being walked nowadays are far too fat.
Broke my heart to see a dog we’ve known for years getting increasingly fat, he could barely walk at the end. He was desperately trying to play with our two 🙁 I’m sure he would have lived longer had he been a good weight.

Original report which is just about readable

That’s so disappointing. I was honestly hoping that the clumber winning would see an uptick in puppies bred, but that article could out the kibosh on that. 🙁

Obviously the judges pick what they consider to be the best dog, but wouldn’t it be amazing to see vulnerable breeds chosen and becoming popular again? Naive, I know. (And unfit dogs [and handlers!] removed!)

While I agree re unfit dogs, and nothing looks worse than an overweight handler wobbling around the ring, age catches up even with the slim and fit!!

I didn’t mean age/weight re handler! I was referencing the Lakeland barely able to place his fores on the ground 🙁
Prob because he wasn't entirely sound in front but then a lot of terriers look unsound to me so perhaps im being overcritical! Just because soundness is my passion. But he did look slightly uneven in front to me. The only group finalist I would have had was the cocker!

Hope this link works. Whether show or working line, all dogs should be fit for purpose and with many breeds that is no longer the case. While judges keep rewarding obese dogs or those with exaggerated features things will never change, and the KC will continue to pay lip service to animal welfare without actually doing anything about it.

The English Setter didn't even get a look in in the Gundog group, I would love for one to win! There's only around 200 bred a year and they're great dogs, should be more popular! I must say that I don't like the show trim that they get though :D I prefer the wild look of ours.

We also got a pink goughnut!

I saw this comparing the winner with a Clumber from the gundog display (the photos of Bruin are, apparently from two years ago when he won best in breed). Nothing about the best in show looks good in this comparison.

Dear god they look like two different breeds.
The winner makes my stomach turn to be honest

Clumbers do nothing for me so I have no axe to grind here and I have only seen said dog on the screen but there is NO way that head shot on the right is genuinely one of the winning clumber!!

Re Clumbers I was talking to a breeder of them about 10/15 years ago and she was explaining that the ?association or ?the KC had agreed to adding cocker blood into the clumber breed as the bloodline was getting inbred. I’d say the dog in the left of the photo looked very cocker like, would be interesting to see the 5 gen pedigrees of each.

That has happened and has been very devisive. Has improved them no end.

Are you sure? This is a cropped photo from the BBC website.
