Today when I picked lady's feet out, the sole on one of her front feet was quite crumbly and her frog is detached a little at the front.

She is out for 3 hours a day, in light work and on a deep shavings bed the rest of the time with ad-lib soaked hay as she is a recovering laminitic (about four months post). She has slight rotation of the pedal bone in both front feet from a bout of laminitis before I had her. She is due to be shod on Monday and I will speak to my farrier about this.

What has caused her sole to crumble and how can I stop this happening in the future?

It was recommended to me when my horses feet started breaking up to paint a mixture of iodine and sugar onto his soles to stop them crumbling and strengthen them.

i would recommend that it is perfectly normal exfoliation which happns in all horses feet.

You dont want it to stop. this is completly normal.

Thanks Lou, I'm used to seeing a little bit of crumbling sometimes but this was quite a lot and what with the frog looking like it was starting to detach I wondered if it might be an after effect of the laminitis.

frogs do wear down and come off in chunks, don't worry too much about that. I'm afraid I don't have any experience with Laminitis so can't say if it might be a result of that but maybe it would make sense if that is now the bit of frog that was next to her pedal bone when it happened?

the frog does detach from time to time.. sometime looks like somone has had a grater on it.. its perfectly normal, just get your farrier to trim it up next time your horse is trimmed!
