CRY FOR THE MANY

I walked to the paddock and muttered her name
She lifted her head and quietly she came
She shuffled on over and stood next to me
And we cried for the many that life had set free

We thought of the horses that suffered in war
From medieval knights,
to barbed wire and gore
Who looked after their soldiers,
but many would fall
A few would return,
but they slaughtered them all
She looked at my face,
it was almost a frown
And we cried for the many that we had let down

We thought of youngsters who have a cruel fate
The ones no one wanted,
who’d end up on a plate
Too many are born with no home for each one
Too many discarded with nowhere to run
I clung to her neck and went into a trance
And we cried for the many that don’t stand a chance

We thought of the circus and how horses are trained
The ones in the muzzles and ones who are chained
An evening of fun for those spectate
A miserable lifetime for those who partake
She let out a sigh and rubbed up to me
And we cried for the many that will never be free

We thought of the racers who raced their last race
The broken and slow who can’t keep the pace
The many unwanted and those thrown away
The fallen, the injured who die on race day
She lowered her head and stared through the gate
And we cried for the many that ran to their fate

We thought of horses who knew only abuse
The one’s treated cruelly, there is no excuse
Beaten with whips and punched in the guts
Bleeding from spurs and covered in cuts
She nuzzled against me, my head in her mane
And we cried for the many that only knew pain

The evening grew darker, my time to go home
I told her I loved her, she was free to go roam
I promised forever that she would be safe
We’d stick together, and always have faith
I thought if I lost her, how would I fend?
And I cried for the many that have lost a horse friend
