I'm just a bit curious as to what rugs you're all putting on at the moment?

Jack is unclipped and lives out during the day and comes in at night. During the day he's got a Weatherbeeta lightweight on and then at night he has a Weatherbeeta fleece on...just wondering am I being a bit mean to him, should he have his medium weight turnout on during the day? I feel the bottom of his ears when he comes in and they don't feel cold! Just with this wind I think he might need a bit more protection?

My mare is unclipped, she is out in the day, in at night and only has a very thin lightweight on, she is a TB type as well so not all that hairy, she is ok though.
I do know what you mean, you cant help worrying that they are warm enough!
 
Two out 24/7 with full clips in middleweights with necks, both are TB's! and they seem happy , others are blanket clipped and out in light/middle's, all the unclipped ones are out with no rugs
Each one seems happy enough , so I've left them like it

Mine are unclipped, out during the day and totally unrugged in wind and rain. They may not be loving it but they are fine. One is a horse used to the heat of southern Spain and the other is an Anglo Arab, but they both have coats like bears!

FWIW, mine is in a very exposed spot, fully clipped, legs and all, and out in all weathers in a MW at the moment - she's very happy. We have others on the yard that are not clipped and out naked, and some with chaser/blanket that are still in LW.
 
Trace clipped (although it's grown out quite a lot) with a medium weight rug on with neck cover. Being blanket clipped on Friday and then will be out with the above plus a full neck fleece too. Oh yeah- out 24/7.

If I were you just keep an eye on weight and what I go by is if I'm needing extra/less layers the horse probably will too!

Fully clipped, out during the day in lightweight with neck, in at night with lightweight stable rug. He is a Welsh D and hasn't felt cold yet, will change to medium weights when and if necessary.
 
Fully clipped inc head and legs. Out in a paddock on the side of an incline - that blows a gale.
Hes in a Heavyweight, with a snuggy hood on!
Comes in snug, but not too warm.
Stabled over night in heavyweight with nexk and if 8 degrees or less an under rug on too.
 
as others said dont be swayed by what others are doing as each horse is different. The best you can do is to feel how he is.....

I have both mine out in lightweight (no fill) unclipped but the gelding felt distinctly colder (i.e when i put my hand in his rug his hair felt quite cool) as opposed to my more ...ahem..well covered mare who felt nice and warm so I put him in a m/w. Then this afternoon I gave the mare a bib clip and put her in m/w with neck (as horrible wind and rain tonight). The weather is meant to be around 14 degrees tomorrow so both will back in l/w just to keep rain and wind off them.

I also know that the gelding will drop weight very quickly if he is cold so pay particular attention to him. The mare on the other hand is hardier and tends to not feel the cold so much .... I think!

One of mine is in a medium weight day and night with neck cover
the other is in a heavyweight 350g rug day and night with a 350g neck cover

The latter has been wearing rugs all summer and is swaddled due to sweet itch.

I generally only need to clip once per year, so there is actually an advantage to over rugging, but you need to be progressive rather than huge changes.

Oh and when it is actually cold they will be in 400g heavy weights and 200g under rugs !

Mine is fully clipped inc face apart from legs, although they were clipped out in his first clip so are not overly wooley. He drops weight very very easily and turns into a skeleton in winter if we are not careful. Also where I am is very windy.

But he is out in a 220g full neck turnout and in at night with a full neck fleece and 200g stable rug on top. Always feels toasty. Tried him in a 300g combo stable rug when I clipped again the other day and he was hot and veiny in the morning. So far weight is staying on as I jsut keep a close eye on rugs and temps - its not really dropping below 10 degrees here even over night
 
Neither are clipped, both are out 24/7 without rugs on. My mare has always been a wimp, and has been known to start shivering as soon as she is wet, but both her and my gelding have grown suitable coats, and with any luck might shiver a bit of weight off (they need to!) May pose a problem in April though when the show pony goes back to competition against all the pampered little darlings who spent winter clipped and rugged to the eyeballs, and I will also probably look silly show jumping a teddy bear.

That's exactly what I would have said, if he's cold rug him up, if he's warm rug him down. I don't think that was a sarcastic reply really. I usually say ..."and sod what anyone else says, your horse, your call" and that isn't sarcastic either.

As my temperatures are hovering between 0C - 8C (positively balmy

) I am only rugging 2 broodmares up at night and they are unrugged by day, no rain, all live out. MW's because I only have MW's, if they are hot they don't need one at all, if they get cold, they wear 2 of them
