Current price of horse boxes?!

I think it is people being cheeky - there was a point when 7.5t were cheap when the grandfather rights were taken away, but I think as people are realising that the costs to do the trailer test can be the same or more that doing the c/c1 test, and that VOSA are clamping down on unsuitable pulling vehicle/trailer combos they are now realising lorries can offer better value so are becoming popular agin and people are cashing in.

I saw a beat up D Reg Ford Iveco (I am thinking more cargo) that needs MOT (but not to worry, only done 70 miles last year) and a darn good clean for a start and they were wanting £4800 for it!!

Working on that basis mine must be worth about £8k!

I must have been lucky then, I recently bought a G reg cargo with 12 months plate, a really nice clean and tidy little lorry that had been maintained by my mechanic for the previous 8 years, I paid around half of the lower budget mentioned by the OP!

Ellie enquire about those above your budget. My lorry I got about three months ago unpaid only about 60% of advertised askin price ;)

Really!?! How did you manage that?? Do you go to see the boxes first before knocking them down or ask if they will accepts offers on the phone?

I sent an email stating my upmost budget on presumption no mechanical issues and went from there. My original offer was £2k off the asking price and knocked a wedge further off due to mechanical work needed!

Be honest and upfront in initial contact as otherwise you're potentially wasting both yours and their time for no good reason. If a lorry has been for sale for some time or short remaining MOT owner prob more open to negotiation ;)

Cargo's are usually very cheap ime jane_lou, as alot of mechanics wont touch them. They don't make parts anymore and once something goes wrong, it all goes wrong it seems!

I have a cargo SupaTrupa and they do make the parts! I should know as ive just spent a fortune replacing loads of parts. Philips Commercials sell them all and do next day delivery and arnt that expensive.

Im selling mine as im looking for something a bit newer (it was my first 7.5t) and its tidy and 1989 and i was no way thinking of putting it up for as much as has been mentioned! Im a realist and when i advertise it i want it sold, not sitting there for months on end as i want to get a new one :D

I know of someone selling a N reg 3 horse for 14k which I thought was a bit steep!

Wow that is a lot! But i guess there are lorries out there that are in poor mechanical condition that are newer and older ones that will go on and on for years as they have been looked after. But still 14k for an N reg is a lot unless its an Oakley lol :p

interesting , mine has just been plated on wed it has an old wooden body on it its an iveco 1998, dont know what to ask for it. As its a heavy box my mechanic said better a pony box or you will be over weight.

i have toilet- sink- etc must work out what its worth. I am planing to up grade too.

Does seem to be very hit n miss. A few months ago when I was "tentatively" looking, there seemed to be plenty matching my budget and spec, but now that I am ready to buy one, sods law its like finding a needle in a haystack!

I don't want to have to travel hundreds of miles for one, but if you are willing to travel then there are still good priced boxes available.

I'm also after a 7.5ton on a short base (max, 20ft) due to access and they are not easy to come by.

I've just sold my ford cargo 3 horse for £375. Bought it 4 years ago for £4500. I'd had it off the road for a year so it needed an mot but it was great condition and I'd never had any problem with it. I had it up for £2500 then £1500 but no interest so in the end I just sold it to someone visiting the farm!

are you looking for a 3.5t or a 7.5t ? - I know someone who converts 3.5t but they have some bigger ones that have been taken in part ex.

if its a Oakley supreme, thats very cheap!

The problem is that there are so many cheap conversions that you can't measure the quality of the work and therefore the safety.

I recently bought a older oakley but I know that it is well built where as I could not guarantee that with other younger, less well known/established companies.

Firstly a big thank you to Jhoward for helping me find this ;-)
So this is my first horse box purchase picked it up yesterday. I am setting of with it to France tomorrow fingers crossed it makes it

It came with a new MOT and the chap trew ( Irish Accent ) in 6 months tax and filled it up with fuel and checked the oil :) He owned and engineering firm and it was his OH van. Seems in good nick new hard wood floor space for 4 horses sitting area ;-) Bit big for me and my lad but hey ho.
The chap I bought it from was a gem very helpful explaining every thing about it. I wish there were more people like him ! Just hope I have not bought a lemon lol

Interesting thread we are selling out 51 plate 3 horse 7.5T Solitaire in a few months and been researching prices which seem to vary by 6-8k!! As a previous poster said what is being advertised is not always what is being got.

What's interesting is I've been looking for an automatic for about 3 years now...

When they do come up the seller puts a ridiculous price on them and you see them week after week coming down on ebay 1k here, 1k there until they finally hit what they are worth...there's one on there right now started at 12 grand, down to 9750, prob worth about 2.5....

Greediness....

Cargo s are incredibly easy to work on (providing some eejit hasnt made it impossible to tilt the cab). Also all parts are now available from good old "Phillips Commercials". Even the price of parts has now fallen dramaticly. As for ,once somthing goes wrong it all goes wrong. Well this is true. Certain parts do wear out at a steady rate and if a brake calliper goes wrong, you can bet that its opposite number is also about to go. There was ,for a long period, a shortage of spares and the ones that were available were ridiculously expensive, so there was a tendency to just replace what had actualy broken.Long term, this is an expensive and unsatisfactory way of doing things. . A well looked after cargo should prettywell carry on indefinately.

I rang up about a Leyland Daf last night, V reg, 12 months MOT, good condition and just had (she said) about 2k spent on it, 3 horse, living, No price on advert, was just going to arrange to see it as it was very near me when I asked the price. £12k! Not what I was expecting..... Maybe it is worth that? I just thought it was a bit overpriced but maybe I'm wrong. I've got an M reg Leyland Daf, very reliable but not the prettiest to sell it has 11 months MOT, passed easily, electric ramp and very basic living, sink, fridge, bed and good solid floor, cut through to cab, easy drive - any ideas what I could expect to get for it?
