Hi there
I need to put some weight on my ISH who is prone to ulcers. I don’t want to make her fizzy either.
She currently has:
Micronised linseed
Gastri aid
Ulsakind cubes
Ulsa balancer
Ulsa-chaff

Someone mentioned Cushcare would be good to add? Thoughts please? X

Id swap the ulsa cubes for something like pink mash condition or copra , or even just some unmollased beet.
Ad lib haylage? Grazing?

I put my 20 year old ex racehorse on it back in October as he had lost weight. Even without feeding at the top of what they suggest he put weight on. That was just the Cushcare and chaff plus hay and grass. He’s on a very small amount of it now. He was on holiday when was he was on it in higher amounts so can’t say if wound him up but he was pretty much normal self once back in work. He’s a little fresh but nothing much for this time of year. Definitely recommend it for condition. He did have ulcers about 8 years back but I don’t specifically look at feeds from that viewpoint more the starch and sugar.

Very highly recommend cushcare my Cushing's mare was one who lost all her condition and topline before being diagnosed and it put her back to looking great as well as being on pergalide. I have lost her now but still use it for my other elderly mare.

How much did you feed to see the weight gain?

Eta i know this is over a year old now but looking into feeding cushcare now for my TB hard keeper

I think I was feeding under the recommended amount but probably two Stubbs scoops a day when he needed the weight gain. I can’t remember for sure though. He’s just on a handful in his breakfast now to make the chaff nicer.

Did you see the weight come on quickly? Sorry for all the questions! Am very interested in feeding this but as I need to pay extra at my yard for feed that I want, just trying to see how economical it might be or to wait until I move (only problem is I don't know when the move might be. Horse is currently an ok weight but I'd like to see more. His current feed I very much dislike)

I can’t recall as it was a couple of winters back but I think it was quite quick and at a maintenance level don’t think you will need to feed too much.

Mine was too slim, put her on Cushcare and she quickly gained weight. I had to take her off it, she got fat quick! Her field companion is now on it, already showing improvement after a fortnight. These horses are 25 and 30 respectively.

Just a normal feed scoop, not one of those enormous round scoops, probably around 500g if I'd weighed it. It has a lot of oil, minerals, fibre etc but is low starch.

Thats really helpful thank you - I was estimating around 600g. I'm thinking if I am able to then take him off the micronized linseed that I pay extra for (and if I could then take him off his balancer) then it is worth it.

I'm so frustrated by being bound by my yard. Can't wait for assisted DIY

I used to use micronised linseed, TBH I didn't see much difference although she wasn't thin then. What did infuriate me was the rats ruffling through her overnight poos, they don't do that with Cushcare.
