Emotive much?????!!!! Gosh, its far better for people to have an old or infirm horse humanely put to sleep than passed through the hands of dealers/auctions/whatever. At least the horses don't suffer that way.

And since when did it cost £3k for cremation????? Daily Mail - research, hello!!!!!!

I agree to an extent, but alot of people are just saying I cant afford it and bang.

There are so many people looking for loan or share horses at the moment, why do they not explore these options?
 
I'm sure for some people things are difficult. I don't know of anyone who has pts their horse through lack of funds but if i found myself in that situation I would personally sell everything I had to prevent that. If that wasn't the answer though far better to pts than run the risk of the horse suffering, although it seems very extreme.

I for one like to thing positively and in my mind there are many options to be considered before that, ie sharing, selling, loaning, reducing livery option from full, part to diy or grass .....
 
The Daily Mail has been known to exagerrate claims from time to time, I think a lot of it will be people not spending a large amount of money on life prolonging vet treatments that dont have a massive effect on quality of life, but that will be the biggest change. Of course there will always be sad cases but I wouldnt take this to literally.

Here in the states, an overpopulation of horses has occurred since they outlawed horse slaughter and export of meat. We can blame do-gooders for much of the suffering of ill-treated horses.

The suggestion that the vast majority of horse owners would not want to consider sending a horse to hunt kennels is somewhat inaccurate and ill advised. Sending a horse to kennels should not be considered the ‘poor mans’ way – it is an option available to all and the choice of many – regardless of finances.
 
i have no problem with sending an animal to hunt kennels! our children's 30+ pony went to the hounds 6 weeks ago, her last "job", she was very quickly and humanely put down first obviously- there is alot of misunderstanding and ignorance on this subject unfortunately!

Oh that is bad, even by the DM's standards! What a load of shite. Why not just use the headline 'Gordon Brown is horse murderer' and be done with it? As for the use of the word 'fellmonger' - if you are going to print emotional claptrap, at least have the courtesy to use the correct terms! And to think I used to read that rag!
 
Do you think they actually spoke to horse owners along side the charities etc? Doesn't look like it!
My horse is with me for his life, BUT, if he was to become ill, and it was something that would cost a cripling amount in order to just prolong his life or suffering then I would have him PTS.
Yes they are pets, family members, but they arent your children and I would never put my horses(or anypets) life over that of a human family member.

They are beautiful creatures, but also a commodity and I class them in the same set as cows/sheep etc (whe it comes to being meat). Strangely my meat loving OH passionately disagrees with me as he classes my horse in the cat/dog category and is a lot more gooesy about it than me.
 
It is a warning. I would certainly not want my horse to end up as meat, I have had four put down and I have requested in each and every case that they are incinerated with other fallen stock and have paid for this service when the bodies were collected after being put down.
