Once again the Mail has been banging on about animal cruelty, this time citing bullfighting *yawn*. As any fule no, animal cruelty on a far greater scale is happening all day, every day, in the cause of meat production. I am not referring to horse abuse, although obviously live transport overseas of any animals is a disgrace.

Please post any links you have here of real, prolonged animal suffering in sanctioned environments, such as slaughterhouses, battery farms etc. and we will see if we can get the Mail behind more compassion in meat production.

Someone posted a link a horrendous bullock slaughter in a foreien abbatoir, and since the UK imports a lot of meat, that is highly relevant - as is any evidence of veal crates, pig crates etc etc.

Worth a go...?
 
A great point made.... I would love to start with this Countries acceptance of sub standard pet ownership. Pets made too readily available, owners buying pets as accessories, owners not walking their dogs, leaving them all day un stimulated, not seeking to get veterinary help etc. etc. I think Britain as a whole needs so take out the plank of wood from it's eye before it sees the splinter in everyone elses!

Popsicle has a good link in her signature about the chinese skining live cats and dogs, unfortunately, I cant remember the address.

There is also compassion in world farming, thats a good one.

Thanks. I do not think we can tackle every aspect of animal cruelty, so as in my OP, I would like to stick to meat production in the UK and countries which supply the UK. I am aware of dreadful animal treatment around the world, but feel the day to day stuff which carries on right under our noses tends to get ignored. For example, owing to govt legislation post F&M, many small local slaughterhouses were closed, necessitating longer journeys to slaughter for most animals. We import pork from countries which do not have the same legislation for rearing as we do, which not only means we are importing meat raised potentially cruelly, but we are undermining British farmers whose production costs are higher due to the legislation. Please keep the links coming!
 
The bullock slaughter one was probably me. It was on the PETA website, & I think was called something like Texas Slaughterhouse.

I will try to find a link when I'm not at work, unless someone else gets there first.
 
Lucretia has posted the link for the slaughter - I posted it a while back as it was HORRIFIC (if that's the one Sooty is referring to). It was way, way worse than any bullfighting I've ever seen and cruelty in meat production has to be one of the most worthwhile causes.

Then again, knowing the Daily Mail, more explicit links might be more appropriate. Personally speaking, the Matadaouro video alone should be enough to turn anyone against the whole factory farming issue, but sometimes it takes a bit more. Would a petition of some kind be any use?
 
Thank you all so much. I am planning to email the links and names of organisation like CIPW to the Mail, and see if they can get behind something worthwhile - for a change! I am not planning to start a petition, but if anyone else does I am happy to sign.

I have to say though that for me, personally, I think bull fighting is a monstrous pastime that should absolutely be stopped.

the clap-trap in Theory....


Jews may only eat animals and birds that have been killed by Shechitah. Shechitah is killing the animals by slitting the throat with a very sharp knife. This has been shown to be painless to the animals, as causing pain to living things is against Jewish law. The theory is that the shape knife cuts the carotid so that the animal loses consciousness before they are able to feel pain. By the time it is possible for the animal to feel pain it is already dead. The animal must then have all the bood drained from them.

just browsing on this forum... and came across this thread. Tbh I don't have the courage to watch a lot of the links... but have watched the Portugese abbatoir one. Also got my grown up sons to watch it. It is totally horrific.
I wish you luck in your campaign... I wish I could help but I don't have the strength to watch any more videos like that one. Well done to all you who can. You have my support.
 
I actually think Kosher and Halal slaughter are humane. The animals are slaughtered individually and are treated with respect. It is not pretty, but the theory is right. Regular slaughter requires stunning before the throat is cut, but as has been seen many times, stunning is often not done effectively or with any great care, and the knives used to slit the throat are not razor sharp like the ones in ritual slaughter. Workers are on a production line and animals are exposed to the sight, sounds and smells of their herd members being killed. No slaughter is pretty, but shorter journeys and sympathetic handling are the key to a more humane procedure - and better tasting meat!
