B*gger, b*gger and b*gger!

Madam was scanned last Tuesday, vet said good timing to jab her into season - so he did. She was in season by Friday but I made them hold off on covering 1st day, we were going for 2 and 4.

Anyway, covered on second day, she bled a bit, so they were leaving a couple of days so they didn't damage her... and they've gone to cover her today - 5th day - and she's gone out of season!

Trying not to get my hopes up of a one shot wonder as day 2 still a little early, but if we've missed now, she'll have to wait til next year.

Bl**dy horses!

Will still get her scanned just in case but gut feeling is we've not got her this time either. Ah well, nature was telling me this was the wrong year with her not coming into season. The little witch has just sneaked an easy summer by default. She's going early next year!

Well keep your fingers crossed they've managed it but if they haven't I can see someone doing a lot of work over the winter to make up for the easy summer she's had! It's been a funny old year even for normally easy breeders so don't get too disheartened.
Good luck, it's not that rare for them to be 'one time girls'!!

Virtually all of my stally's in-foal mares this year have been one-shot-wonders, as they have nearly all been by shipped chilled semen, and with that you only get one 'covering'! His mares AI'd with frozen semen have taken at the first attempt as well.

So it really must be quite normal for mares to get in foal with just one attempt! You may well be surprised and find she is in foal...

Is this the mare in your sig pic? She looks lovely!

All my mares were only covered the once as well and all confirmed in foal. Two of them were walk-in, and the rest were covered by our own stallion here on site. The visiting mares took first time except one who was covered twice in one season, and then confirmed in foal 15 days later. Our vets have been saying that most of the mares covered early (February/March) had no problems getting in foal, but later mares have been a problem.

I really hope so but I'm convincing myself not so that if anything, I may get a nice surprise for a scan but am prepared for not...!

And yes, thats her orangeyness the supreme spoiled madam... I can imagine her having a very nice Tobago baby don't you think???

It is late in the year, mine is at stud at the moment and I am hoping she will still take, but as weeks pass it seems more unlikely

Never mind, if it doesn't work now you can always plan for an early spring baby.

LOL! 'Her Orangeyness' - I love that!

You're probably wise not to get your hopes up too much, I suppose. My grandmother always used to say "Blessed are they who expect nothing, for they shall not be disappointed"

I do like your mare, though - do you have any bigger pics you could post? What's her breeding?

I'm sure Tobago would like her too!

But you wouldn't get a spotty baby.

Gosh - that stally of yours is a most amazing colour!

Oh Touchwood I'm really sorry to hear that. It's no consolation, I know, but you are certainly not alone - lots of breeders have had a very bad year.

Is it the bizarre weather, do you think?

I do hope next year will be a good one for you.

She's 3/4 TB and 1/4 "Welsh with a question mark" as we aren't definite... but she has furry feet, a leg at each corner, and we think missing granny was Welsh B/C cross, all other grandparents def TB!

No wonder your smitten with her GM very nice! What a fab bascule over that fence! and what a fab rich colour! and looks great in the show ring too! Gotta love those chestnuts, no idea why their is so much stigma about chestnut mares, haven't had a bad one yet! Fingers and toes crossed, who have you bred her to? Sorry if I have missed it? and who is the foalie by?

The foalie pic is actually her 15 years ago... I bred her out of my pony mare to a TB called Alfie Dickins.

She's gone to a graded british Appy - further up the thread somewhere... he is a real all-rounder and events so I thought it was a good match.

She's my little baby see, can't wait to see what we get, I know it won't be another her. Never known a chestnut mare as soppy! But yes, she has a lovely colour to her, she has very metallic sheen copper highlights in her coat, looks lovely when (and if) the sun shines!

Wow! Thanks for the pics Gingermare! She really is super - and clearly multi-talented as well: showing, jumping, western, eventing - looks like she can do pretty much anything! Now that's the sort of mare that one would be proud to breed from.

My boy certainly wouldn't kick her out of bed LOL! He has that metallic/iridescent sheen as well - not always easy to capture in piccies (especially when the sun refuses to shine) but you can just see it in this one:

It's much more dazzling in real life. I do hope he passes it on.

Can't wait to see your girl's spotty baby!

What showing classes do you do with her? That looks like a working hunter class with the jumps?

Yes working hunter for showing, and show hunter, riding club horse, small hunter - anything we can find!

Did I mention I started breaking her to harness too? Poor mare has to put up with a lot!

I think the best shot I got of the metallic sheen lately is this one (bigger version of one of the above)...

But very difficult to reproduce! You get the general shine on the photos but not how deep and rich and downright sparkly the metallic copper colour is... it glitters in the sun.

That's a great photo - love her colour! But I agree it seems almost impossible to capture it - in real life it looks like they've been sprayed with glitter or something - almost as hard to describe as it is to photograph!
