I am currently looking for a new dog. Defo a puppy have had rescue dogs in the past but really would like one that I have trained and suits our lifestyle right from the begining !

Now I have only really had med - to large breeds but have been really taken with the mini Daschund. What I am worried about is having such a little dog on the yard with big horses. How do they cope - do they have a a bit of sense ?? And would you recommend a smooth coat or wire haired as bear in mind that it would be outdoors most of the day - have kennel and snuggy beds in hay barn and kitchen. so which would be better suited to a life on a yard ? Any info would be greatly received!

Thanks

I was at the vets last week and one of the women who worked there had 2 mini wire haired. I thought they were adorable, I usually go for a bigger dog but was seriously attracted to these 2.

She said they had big personalities but were also lovely cuddly dogs.

On the strength of seeing them, I did a puppy search and they seem to be few and far between. There are a few breeders on the KC website but nothing current.

Mind you, I'm still trying to persuade OH we 'need' a new dog.

ooh, I love the mini wires too!:)

Regarding coat type, I think both would require coats in cold, wet weather. As for being around horses, I would worry that they wouldn't be able to shift out the way quick enough & because they are so low to the ground whether a horse would notice them anyway:eek:

Piggy has a Dashound and she is cool, dosent mind horses from what im told and she goes to all Piggys events with her.

I never would have thought of one as a yard dog but they are cool,

We had several of them as children and they were all great little dogs and fine around the horses. For some reason my parents then went for springers for a while, but mum has just got a new mini smooth haired bitch and she is a lovely dog:)

Downside is they are a trip hazard, they are more likely to get hurt if they do happen to be trodden on, they have breed related disorders (much like any other pedigree dog) and they yap like crazy. They are also hunters by nature, so I've lost count of the number of times we had to dig them out of rabbit holes and once from under the floorboards of a derelict house!:D

I had a friend who had two daxi's. When she went out hacking on her Arab, the two daxi's went with her. Sadly one disappeared down a hole and was never seen again. If kept fit, they are great little dogs, but I think they have hound mentalities and like to hunt.

I have a dachshund :) This is Murphy..

I'll be honest we've had 2 daxies and they are fantastic little dogs extremely loyal and loveable, the last one was a fair bit calmer and well behaved but Smurf is a little **** but i am completely in love with him!
He is good around the horses, prefers them to dogs. However i went up to the yard one day in my pyjamas with no bra on yes and the little **** chased after the cat at full pelt, across a field and then into the next doors garden with me in hot pursuit until i eventually rugby tackled him to the ground, very unnatractive! He seems to have deafness when it comes to chasing things..Both our daxies hate the rain intensly, mum reckons a wire haired would be better but i'm not so sure..Murphy is pretty much a lunatic :) x

A friend has these two:

:)

I really wouldn't worry about them and horses - here in Warendorf wire-haired dachsunds are by far the most common breed, and this is the horsey capital of Europe :)

A bit like jack russels everywhere else....here *everybody* (from Klaus Balkenhol to my next door neighbour) has got one - or two! They are clearly 'the' dog to have if you have horses ;)

we had 2, a standard long haired, and a miniture long haired.

both were yard dogs (a erm muddy yard at the best of times) and were really really good. the mini was definitely a hunter (rats, feral kittens :o, bunnies etc) but came back when called.

never needed coats(!) occasionally hosed off.

kept out of the ponies way and generally had quite a lot of horse sense and moved out of the way so you didnt fall over them.

love dackys, would have another 10 tomorrow. far better than jack russels/all terrriers that we have now :(

Fab news thanks xloopylozzax sounds like they maybe suitable for the lifestyle we all lead. Now I only have to find a breeder with quality pups !

i think both of ours came from scotland (i remember driving to scotch corner and sitting in a service station carpark to pick the standard one up) the other was rehomed as an older dog. will look for pictures :)

Just make sure you go to a VERY reputable breeder if you are going to get a puppy because they can have Awful horrible health problems.

Oh thank-you for the advice - what sort of things should I be aware of ?

And can anyone point me in the right direction of a breeder that would help me with my many questions and to find a pup?

Thank-you for the info - I have been in touch with the D club and they were very helpful. Didin't realise that they could have so many problems - Now I am armed with the right info I can make an educated choice !

THANKS EVERYONE !!!!!
