**Daughter and Dolly - a couple of photos and videos to share!!**

Hi everyone,

Just a very quick update!!

Things are going really well - Dolly and daughter are loving their dressage at the moment, and daughter is really really pleased to have got her best score yet this month of 72.5%! We've been out and about to a few shows in our van, and all has gone well! I've driven the van myself a bit now and hopefully this weekend will be the first time out with me driving with Dolly onboard!! :D

We're waiting for the weather to buck up a bit and for the spring/summer turnout to chill Dolly out a bit (:p) then Dolly and Daughter are set on improving their jumping experience!

We've had a few cheeky moments recently (and one week in particular where Daughter managed to fall off 3 times in 7 days!!! not like her at all!!!:eek:) and Dolly seems to have developed this habit of running towards me when she's supposed to be cantering a circle! We're working hard on breaking that because it's one thing in an enclosed arena, but in a field at a show might be a problem!!! Anyone got any hints on how to break this habit? Our plan at the moment is for me to just stand there and daughter canters circles near me until she stops doing it??? :o

One thing that's massively improved is her stable manners. She's much much nicer to handle now. Which is lovely for all of us!!! We've even taught her to pick a hoof up and say please (although she currently sort of digs instead of picking it up :o)

I love your updates and oh my goodness your daughters riding has improved so much - she handled the cheeky moment very well!
 
What a fantastic team! Well done them on such a great result...the envy of us all with that percent ;) I too love the second vid so cheeky and a great bond between them...keep the updates coming! I drive my 3.5 ton with my 16.2 mare, you definitely get used to it...although I was full of "the fear" the first time, we now go out and about by ourselves! :)

love the photos :D MiniRM did really well with the cheeky moment - she looks very in control and just right up there! I would tackle the problem in the same way, fwiw - just keep making her circle and not allowing her to get away with it and she'll eventually realise it's easier not to bother :p

Just need to sort this blasted weather out and she can crack on with the jumping :D

I thought she handled it well too! Not a peep out of her or me! It was funny because we just both went quiet and she carried on as if nothing had happened! Just wish I'd held the camera steady so you could see the determined look Dolly had - was sure I was being squished!!! Been told I need to grow a pair (by work colleagues!) so as to ensure I catch any potential you've been framed moments!!!

I'm the same!! I'm sure in time it'll be second nature, because I'm quite a confident car driver. But I am a little apprehensive of the first time with Dolly on board!!!

I do love the itchy video! :D

Definately!!

I think we'll work on the circling every weekend when we're on our own! I just don't want to be at a show with them and have her charge over to me! :o Otherwise I've said I won't watch, or wear a disguise.

Disguise is more likely! :D

OK actually laughing out loud at the idea of you in disguise - I can just see you in a big fake red beard and wig and a funny hat :D

I wouldn't want to be charged by a Dolly either :eek:

Such a shame kids have to outgrow their ponies, not that your daughter has outgrown her yet, I was just thinking aloud as it were. Broke my daughter's heart when she got too big for her pony!

Anyway, you won't need to worry about that for a while. Glad they are getting on better now. Have you ever looked back and read your first posts on here about all the troubles you were having? If only you could have known then, that it would all turn out so well.

Perhaps a Mark Todd jacket, some jodphurs and hunter boots would be a good disguise for me!!! I'd blend in then! :D Would have to do something about my hair though......

Naw I didn't fancy being mown down by her! She's only short but rather round and heavy. Now is that Dolly or me??????? :confused:

Love how miniRM dealt with dollys naughty moment she was on it before dolly even realised :D. The weather needs to improve so they can crack on with the jumping then me and JFTD can steal them both for a little pony camp :D

Looking good, and 72.5% is certainly not to be sniffed at :p

Re: the attachment to you, forewarned is forearmed! Your daughter knows she is likely to try it on so has to ride strongly before Dolly is able to turn towards you. Once she's actually coming towards you it's a little too late!

If you are in a corner of the school, get your daughter to stay on a large circle in the school. When Dolly comes round in the part of the circle nearest you your daughter will need to ride a bit stronger to tell Dolly that 'No' she isn't allowed to bulge out towards you or fall out through her shoulder or turn and head towards you! Even something as simple as having a crop in her outside hand can be enough to keep her going in the direction she has been told to go in! If she is consistent Dolly should learn that she has to listen to little jockey :D

A lot of horses do a similar thing where they are 'attached' to the arena gate :rolleyes: and you need to get after them before they are nappy :D
 
I am awaiting the horrendously enormous growth spurt as your daughter is tiny, as was my sister. She moved up to secondary school and was still looking small on a compact 12.2hh type. 18 months later and her feet were hanging down by her 14hh cob's knees!

MiniRM is looking so in control and secure on Dolly, despite the cheeky moments! If you're worried about PC stuff where it is all in one big field, don't- all the instructors are very used to ponies doing what ponies do best and being cheeky so and sos! And 72.5%?! That's amazing!

Second the PC being used to mischevious ponies theres a good reason that ours are kept enclosed in the fenced in bits :cool::D.

In all fairness, she's only 5'6 now- Reg uses his magincal shrinking skills to make her not look like a midget :D (at 5'2 nearly, I'm still waiting too!!)
 
Thanks for the lovely update - I love them. Well done to your daughter on her marks - excellent! Please give Dolly a hug from me, she is such a character!
Well done you, as well on the van driving, I was as nervous as anything when I first got mine.

I've tried to reply twice to this and each time my work PC has ate it!!! Well I'm home now so here we go!! AND I have beer! Who wants shares??? :D

I'm not too worried about daughter outgrowing Dolly. We're a very short family :rolleyes: and daughter isn't 5 stone yet! I've seen a small, light adult ride Dolly and not look silly. She's quite a stocky one :p so I think we're ok!! And the plan is when daughter gets bigger, she wants to race her if possible and do mounted games (which she can do now, but when she's a bit taller the vaulting bit will be easier!!!).

When I think back to my early posts, I feel quite embarrassed to be honest! I was such a worrier and so neurotic at times!! :o I'm not daft - I know with a less spirited (putting it nicely!) and not as strong pony, Daughter would be doing faster work and more jumping etc... but we've adapted to daughter and Dolly's abilities and we don't feel like we're making do - things are great. I feel they're doing really well. And she has taught daughter so much, she's such a better rider for it!

Only tip I could give RE pulling towards you, if she does get close to you get your daughter to still only turn her the way she was meant to go i.e. not turning back on yourself like in the video. I was also told it's almost like letting the horse getting away with whatever they did wrong. Your daughter is a fab rider and you should be proud of her :)

Dolly's always had a tendency to be nappy. She used to run to the gate, the other ponies, the opposite way daughter wanted in general lol!! :D So daughter was a bit disappointed that she's trying a new tactic, but as I said to her, we've worked the other habits out of her, this one shouldn't take long. She used to not be able to canter a circle on the left rein without bombing in the opposite direction. That's when holding the whip in the outside hand helped loads, so I know that works! We're not going to ignore it, head on here we come!!!!
