Hi everyone,

I always know that I've been lazy in my updates when I have to check the last one before starting my new update, just to see where we're up to!!!

It's been a very up and down month. Dolly started the month rather cheeky and went through a period of being, well a little swine! She was either very strong or very lazy, either jumping 3 foot above every jump or refusing!! Rushing then backing off!!! In my novice brain, I diagnosed this as going a bit sour, and getting a bit fed up after a long summer of competing.

Of course, she decided this a week before the North West Champs!!!

So I debated whether to take them or not. It really was getting that bad. And Honey08 came to my rescue (again!!) She told me to box her up and bring her over!!! So Honey so kindly gave daughter and her stepson a fab XC lesson, which did help Dolly regain her enthusiasm, but even Honey said that Dolly wasn't herself. It was a fab day though, and daughter (despite being a little frustrated and, dare I say it, tired and nervous herself) really enjoyed it! We love you Honey 08!!!

So we took them to the champs - they'd qualified for the SJ and the workers.

The first working hunter class was a shame. It was beginners, the course was built to height but still quite a nice, if not a bit scary, course. Off they went, and Dolly took a dislike to a white jump on a severe slope and refused. Such a shame, but the standard was so high, there was no chance of getting through to the showing with refusals.

Whilst the workers carried on, they went into their SJ champs class. Dolly was awful, and was eliminated by the third fence. Gutted!!!!!! She just didn't want to play.

I asked daughter (who was getting a little exasperated by this point!) to take her into the separate clear round, which she did. They whizzed round - Dolly going 100 miles an hour, and then trying to slam the brakes on at each jump. Daughter took no prisoners, and although Dolly only got one tap with the whip, it's not a tap I would have wanted myself!!! The pony club kicking legs were out in force!!!

So finally, they decided to go into the next Working Hunter class - the novice workers. We walked the course together and ARGGGH it was nasty! They've done a few novice workers, but nothing like this one. Each jump was big and nasty!!! Honestly, I didn't think they'd get round. And of course, there was the nasty white jump which Dolly didn't like - but this time is was bigger and had a gate!!!

In they went, and Daughter seemed 100% more confident (not sure why - I wasn't!). She trotted really boldly up to the judge and after a brief chat, off they went!!!

Dolly was amazing (and daughter was too!) she totally ate the fences up and bounced all the way round! Didn't bat an eyelid at anything! Even the big horseshoe jump! So a lovely clear round later, they were through to the showing.

The classes were really big, and there was about 20 clears who went through to the showing. At this point we were REALLY daunted. We suddenly realised that we were surrounded by £50K horseboxes, and most of the other ponies in the class were serious money ponies!!! Sounds awful this, but we've never been to a comp before where all the other competitors are of such a high standard - we felt seriously out of our league, sadly.

Daughter and Dolly rode their hearts out. Dolly was amazing, and was one of the few ponies who did a serious gallop. It was about the most perfect show they've done.

So then came the placing. They placed up to 12, with trophies to 6th place and prizes, sashes, rugs etc.... to 1st and 2nd. As the names came over the tannoy (the ratbags counted back from 12!!) it became obvious that they'd either not been placed or been placed quite high!!

I was absolutely thrilled when they were pulled in 5th!!! They received lovely rosettes, prizes and a trophy! Dolly received a bag of treats too!!!!

We just couldn't believe it. Our little ginger monster stood up there with all the posh ponies!!! After the photographs, I went over to take the trophy off daughter for the lap of honour - but instead she handed me her whip, and did the lap of honour one handed carrying the trophy high.

I always love the way she pins the rosettes on Dolly too, and never wears them herself. She does make me proud.

So Dolly redeemed herself. We trooped off home, making a very hard day into a complete success!!!!!

Dolly then got a fortnight off!!! Well she was hacked a bit, to stop her getting fat. But no "work" as such.

We brought her back out and did a little workers show a couple of weekends ago, where despite a really late start and no warm up (long story, air ambulance landed next to our horsebox to help someone so we couldn't unload!!!) she pulled a really good 2nd place in!!!! She really is an awesome little pony, and she's back on form now after a well deserved break.

One thing Dolly does well is tell you when enough is enough!!!!

So here's the photos.......

My girls can fly!!!

So here we are the end of the latest update. I have to warn you all to have your tissues (and wine!) ready for the next one. We're in serious family discussions with "where to go next".

I think it might be time to move on from our Dolly, sadly. Daughter seemingly won't stop growing. And I'm going to need all your help and support to get me through the next steps, as I REALLY am struggling with the thought of letting Dolly go.

But for now, sod that. She's our ginger monster. Who taught my girl to ride.

You've all had that "special one" who you've loved and could have strangled a thousand times. They have that twinkle in their eye that says, "go on I dare you". They'll either kill you, or you'll win. Dolly is all that to us, and I wish to god she would just grow another 2 hands (LOL! Now HOW many of you have thought that!!!) - but seriously a 14hh Dolly might be a serious PITA!!!

Anyway, have a glass of wine with me tonight and of course, some sour fizzy haribos. Whilst I think how the HELL I am going to fill the gap she will leave.

RM :)

Wow I love that first pic! They look amazing! Am glad dollys feeling better after a break, and daughter hasnt hit and more sheds (think that was last report I read?!) Good luck with changing to something bigger, are there any littler kids on your yard that could maybe loan her? May be worth a few months overlap to get used to new one before dolly goes? Shes such a fab pony and im sure will have a fantastic home that will enjoy her as much as you guys have x

No, not hit any more shed since last report - but did land on a wall if that counts?!!!

I'd love to have a few months overlap, and yes, think it would do her good.

Such a hard decision, still hoping I'll work out how to financially keep two - but then, that's probably not the right answer for anyone, but perhaps me.

Thanks for your kind comments xxx

Always get drawn into reading your reports. Can't believe how far D+D have come. Can't advise on your future as a team, but whatever happens, it will happen for a reason and no doubt, with D's excellent riding, your ''new'' team will go far. So, don't dread it, embrace it when it happens.

Well done on the prizes, you must have rather a big collection now!

I have raised my glass to dolly and daughter. what a pair. what a team. truelly amazing and credit to your daughter. she stuck thete she believed and bloody hell she as achieved . ok so maybe time to think bigger move on and let daughter florish. will be hard thete will be tears but look at dollys future(advertised well good home) look at daughters future .you sound a good mum no pressure to daughter(your daughter is amazing) you will find(prob another no hoper) and daughter will shine. im trying to say in a gabbled way ONWARDS AND UPWARDS to your daughter. shes a fab lovely girl who coukd teach a few adults a few things . x x x

Thank you FM!!! You've been with us a while now haven't you! :-)

Yes, D & D have a nice collection now!! Sort of wondering what we'll do with it when, well, Dolly's someone elses pony.

Thank you for your lovely comments, I am trying to embrace it. But even sat here now, I'm thinking, stuff if - given them another year!!!!! ;-)

Thank you so much!! You're very very kind.

Daughter's riding has got a little, well "sloppy" recently! I don't know if it is all the jumping or if it is even that she is getting a little big for Dolly. We put her stirrups down tonight, and instantly she looked 100% better - so perhaps she's trying to ride short so as not to look big!!!!

I have no doubt we'll end up with another "challenge"! But I'm determined that it'll be so brave it'll never stop at a jump!!! Not after dirty stop dolly!!!!!!!

I do try my best not to put any pressure on Daughter. What's the point? All I want to see is that smile on her face, nothing else bothers me. She's a good girl, and whilst the onset of teenage years is making her a little lazier, once she's up she's a grafter! I'm lucky - she's never really given me a days worry.

Thanks again, you've been a lot of support over the past few years, stay close - I might need you!!! x

That made me well up! Very well done to all of you.
If/when Dolly moves on please ask her new owner to join the forum so we don't lose touch?!
Your daughter is like Mary King - always smiling, lol!

They look absolutely fantastic, so does the tweed :)

Always a hard decision to move on, but Dolly *may* have just been pointing you in the right direction.

How tall is D now? And age? (out of interest)

Hahahaha I will tell her that!!!! I think it's borne of a few years of instructors (and me!) saying whatever happens, even if Dolly is EXPLODING underneath you, paint on a smile and the judge will either be impressed or amused!!! Mary King is her idol by the way lol!

I'm not sure what direction we'll go in now, we're going to definately keep going with Dolly until after Xmas. Then we'll have some difficult decisions to make I think.

Time seems to have gone so fast..... :-(

Ah I wondered why I hadn't seen many show pics on FB!!
Moving on ponies is hard I know been there done that!!
But sometimes it's just time.
If you can afford to but a new one without selling Dolly you could loan her even if its off your yard, that way you can still keep an eye on her you are still in control but she's out there teaching another little person the ways.
I know it's hard, I regretted it when hokey went for ages but if I hadn't we wouldn't have got Star and that's been an amazing and hopefully got a few years yet left!!
Xxxx

Hi Dunkley,

Thank you!! The tweed was hard for us! As old school goths/heavy metal fans (and that includes daughter now hahahahahahaa!!!!!) tweed isn't actually "au natural" for us!!! lol!!!

Daughter is 4 foot 9 ish, just under 5 stone and 12.

So still definately within Dolly's capabilities, but starting to look a bit "leggy" which wouldn't be a problem if she didn't like competing as much as she does, but she does.

xxx

they're looking grand - massive well done to D&D!

As for moving on... Well I can't advise there - I never did sell my first pony ;)

URGH!!!!! I'm finding it SOOOOOOOO hard to get my head around.

I am contemplating asking our yard about loaning her or even back on working livery or something, simply because their horse and pony care is second to none. They are simply awesome when it comes to looking after horses, and we owe a lot of Dolly's improvement to them. After being looked after by them for so long, I'm not sure I could face Dolly going anywhere less!!!

It is hard though. I know Daughter will need to move on, but watching them compete is quite awe inspiring to me! I don't think we'll have that again - I don't when she's ridden other horses. It's just because Dolly is so......well.....unpredictable! Sometimes she's amazing and other times she's horrendous! It's like watching X Factor or something similarly painful yet addictive lol!!!!!! Perhaps that's not the best comparison!!!!! ;-)

D&D look super together, but miniRM is seriously growing like weed! Is she sleeping in a grow-bag or something!?

I think owning horses is continually making hard decisions about what is best for you and your pony/ horse. In years to come miniRM will look back and recount how amazing these years with Dolly were and how much fun she had with her. Promise! The feeling of outgrowing a pony, in height or in ambition, is horrible but when you see them out terrorising a new generation of rider it is quite heart warming...

It is sooo hard I completely understand.
I never thought I'd find one we'd love as much as Hokey but well Star has turned out to be just that, but again she didn't come ready made its been alot of sweat and tears.
Tbh though if your still waivering about it, you may be not quite ready. One day you'll take them somewhere and you'll just know that's what happened with us.
But don't you worry, if you get a new one there will be plenty of challenges!!! ;-)

Different for me, RM, mine was 15hh and built like a brick... y'know what I mean ;) Not sure even I could squeeze onto a midget like Dolly!
