could maybe have been stopped if you and yours hadn't taken such a small minded view in our appeals to stop the importation of supposed meat horses from mainland Europe in the name of 'RESCUE'. I hope you will accept your responsibility in the importation of this infectious disease. You were shouting from the rooftops re the link about the saving of Spud and Carrots by HHO members but when we tried to awaken the HHO community to the risks of importing so called meat horses, you stopped us. I hope you will now allow us to tell the truth. Mairi.

I can't believe the people who run these sites, can read about bringing a disease like this into our country, and not care about what might happen.

Time to ban imports like this and pray this doesn't spread

Erm, perhaps if the 'Franch' v 'Anti-Franch' HHO users were capable of debating the topic without turning it into a defamatory bitchfest then HHO admin would have been able to let the threads run

Swamp fever ,,,,EIA

thank you and great just what this country need another infectious disease.

just another stupid question what does EIA stand for i want to google it and see what we are up against.

We have EIA over here and it fills everyone with terror. I'm astounded that the 'rescuers' chose to overlook the risk of bringing EIA into the UK when they undertook to bring these horses over...
I assume it's a lack of understanding that made them take such a dreadful risk!? Sod the tripartite agreement. Coggins tests all round; we have them done here at 2mth intervals and it's no hassle.

We don't know that this was brought in by 'rescuers', do we? I can think of at least one wiltshire dealer who imports from former eastern bloc countries, they aren't rescues, they are just cheap.

Why bring that old [****] up again?????
I seem to remember that anything said against Franch and her henchmen was instantly buttoned by the pro rescues-well almost.

If it was so called rescuers or registered dealers the problem exists. Rumania is endemic as is Italy. When I sold a horse to England (from Italy) he had to have a clean bill of health which included a negative Coggins test. I would like to know how a Rumanian horse managed to enter GB without said certificate seeing that Rumanian horses are rotten with the disease.
I would like to add that many horses are HEALTHY CARRIERS of the disease ie no symptoms whatsoever but able to transmit.
You really dont know what you are all up against if this disease takes hold.
Would like to say to those who are convinced that the weather is detrimental to the widespread..not true! here in Italy we have winter temps of up to minus 20... we still have new cases every year

I'm slightly confused...

I do not support the 'rescue' of meat horses, it's stupid for many reasons, but what does this have to do with this case?

France doesn't have EIA, these horses came from Romania via Belgium according to the article and the tripartite agreement covers UK, Ireland and France. What have I missed???

The article quoted in CR says the diseases was spotted in routine post-import testing, so that seems to suggest there is a process in place, it was followed and it did work.

Whether this process should be more stringent is another matter.

As I understand it the disease is carried via blood sucking insects like mosquitos. Not many mosquitos round here at the moment, so I'll put off panicking for a while...

Is this a test that has to be done by a vet - having the vet out every two months in the UK to do a blood test would be very expensive - something that perhaps a lot of horse owners would struggle to afford.

And midges I believe, along with any other biting insect (correct me if I'm wrong). We have midges here ATM so they didn't stay dormant for long after the cold weather, and given that it's usually warmer the more south you go, they may have been active at the infection site long enough to have begun to spread it.

Quick Google search reveals that only one type of midge sucks blood and is therefore even theoretically capable of transmitting this disease, the Ceratopogonidae midge.

Furthermore studies seem to show that less than 5% of midges survive the day in the winter (http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=1521778) with factors such as wind speed and lower temperatures adversely affecting survival rates further.

Epidemics are all a matter of statistics. Looking at these numbers I bet you more horses will die from flu in the UK this year because they are not vaccinated than EIA.

I guess the difference is that, AFAIK, we didn't have EIA in this country until this outbreak whereas we already have flu. It's like Rabies; we don't currently have that so in order to keep it that way, we have strict quarantine rules (I know rabies is transmitted differently).

OK, I am entirely with you there! I don't want to import EIA in this country either, but there seems to be a system in place for checking, the checks were done, the horses were euthanised. It seems to have worked?

Perhaps we should have a stricter system, but would people really trust a piece of paper from another country certifying the horse was EIA free?

Still not sure what this has to do with the 'rescue' discussions.

Still think there is no cause for worry regarding this disease spreading from this incident which appears to have been quickly contained.

QR: I would just like to clarify the following.

The anti Franch rescue people were not against the import of Franch rescue horses for the sake of it.

One of the many reasons for opposition to this trade, is because there is a loophole in the law, these horses are able to be imported without stringent veterinary checks, which means that crippled, diseased, and infectious horses can get into this country. The very real threat of EIA entering the UK was always high on the agenda.
Those on HHO who think iNAGS is simply about the Franch rescue cause, are invited to read the info and blogs, rather than just passing this off as yet another anti Franch argument.

I am saddened by those who are belittling this problem.

That has to be one of the most ignorant comments I have read on here.
I hope to god that the owners of the two dead horses don't come on HHO...

QR to whoever said it had been quickly contained....

How can you say it's been quickly contained? The horses arrived here before Christmas!

From spotting the first animal with suspected FMD to the first cull was a matter of 48 hours I believe....yet look where that ended in 2001?

I believe vector transmitted diseases have the propensity to cause more widespread infection, possibly over a quicker period. I fully expect we will see a cluster of cases in Wiltshire within the next few days.

The thing is we have the flu vaccine for horses so we do have a greater level of protection. Whereas EIA we are unprepared for as our horses are not vaccinated.

Other info suggests ANY blood sucking flying insect can carry EIA....including the horse fly.

It's not just restricted to midges. I didn't see much evidence of 95% of midges not surviving our recent -12c cold snap yesterday and Sunday. There were gnats everywhere!

But the horses did not come from France???? I really fail to see the relevance.
