You know how I am always wildly critical of dog showing? You know how I shout loudly that I wouldn’t be seen dead at Crufts, that dog showing is a total fix, that it is all mad? Well.......?

I noticed recently on my local greyhound rescue page that one of the greyhounds who was in for re-homing around the same time as my boys had gone to Crufts! They do a special ‘racing/coursing’ class for whippets and greyhounds where the hounds don’t have to be KC registered in the traditional sense.... so I found myself wondering whether Ace greyhound might go to Crufts next year ??? He did win BIS at the Greyhound Rescue show this year after all ?

First step is to get him assessed by my mum - she has already said she doesn’t know greyhounds bless her, but she can tell a well constructed dog that moves well a mile off, regardless of the breed ? If she thinks Ace is OK, that will be enough for me ?

If he passes that test then I’ll see about getting him quasi-KC registered (apparently his greyhound pedigree should be enough) - and then I need to get him out and about because he isn’t the most confident soul in the world, even though he has come on in leaps and bounds in the year I’ve had him ❤️ I’ve got plenty of time to see if I can build his confidence, if he decides he hates it then it’s no big deal, we stay at home ? but hopefully he trusts me enough now to know it will be OK when we go places together ?

I’m laughing at myself so much for even going on this journey but it will be fun to try, and I hope Ace will enjoy it too - he is such a gentle giant, I love him so much ❤️?❤️?

My only disappointment is that if Ace does make it to Crufts, hounds and toys aren’t on the same day so I won’t see my mum there!

There are racing/luring classes for greyhounds at WELKS champ show. Entries close in 6 days you can enter online any fossedata.co.uk

Thanks very much Satinblaze we are all systems go now ?

Ace is having assessment by my mother on Sunday (no point trying if she says his conformation is dreadful and he can’t move lol!) and then if that is ok we will hopefully be able to register him with the KC online and enter for WELKS online

3 Counties show ground is about 30 minutes from me, it couldn’t be more perfect ?

I’m hopeful he should be OK - against my will I’ve ended up with a good eye for a decent dog simply through growing up in a showing home lol, absolutely no skill or anything on my part ??

Sobs.... I won’t get into WELKS, the Kennel Club in their usual mega efficient way take 28 days at least to register Ace so I’ll have to find some where else to take him ? At least they only charge £15, I’m amazed ???

I’ll check the other shows for you to see which have your class. Birmingham national is at Stafford if that is close enough for you

Yep Stafford is easily do-able too thanks - I was thinking the Hound Association would be a good bet too but I haven’t checked Fossedata to see when their show is ? I’ll also look at the Greyhound Club shows - annoyingly their open show is this Sunday, so another one that is too soon, and it is quite local being in Oxfordshire! Never mind ?

This sounds like an excellent plan Lev! :) It will be very exciting to have updates :) :) Next thing will be heel work to music...:p:p

Crufts greyhound critiques 2019 - a link

For your interest. If you're aiming for Crufts why not try do the Good Citizen test and enter that class also?

Gosh that was a blast from the past - Monica Boggia is still showing! And has greyhounds! Who knew... she had other breeds of hounds many years ago when I was showing whippets.

I’ll investigate the good citizen scheme thank you, I know there were greyhounds doing it this year ?

All breeds have Good Citizen classes at Crufts and they are judged as a breed class, no special requirements. The dog just needs to have attained the Good Citizen cert beforehand. The classes often only have 2-3 entries in greyhounds, it would be good for them to have better support.

Oh no. No, no and thrice no. Never ever ever in a million years, not even when I’m posting on HHO at 100 years old ???

Just wait till someone tells you that Ace would be a natural at it and that you would look fabulous dressed up as Cinderella/Charlie Chaplin/Sugar Plum Fairy/John Wayne(delete as appropriate) :D:D I am not decrying HTM in any way -just not for me and I have instructed friends that if they ever find me heading that way to please make a mercy killing...!! But hell, I am sure you once felt that way about showing...

You are a wicked person and I am absolutely killing myself laughing here ?????

I must confess, I did show my whippets in my youth....before I knew any better ?.... so I’m not as pure and innocent as I make out ?
