Now I've made the decision to go to college in the autumn, I need to get on with finding Ty a loan home with the view to maybe selling him in the future.

So here's the boy:

(excuse shocking riding, this was last year!)

So, he's 15.3 and approx 12 years old. He is blind in one eye but always has been and managed to fool a vet into passing a 5 stage vetting!

He has suspected hock spavin but will be fully diagnosed before he moves home - I suspect that it will be a course of cortizone and then bute for a while as I think it's already fusing.

He will do a decent dressage test (going out next week to get him out and about) and will jump once his hocks are sorted.

He's good to hack out alone and in company although is not a novice ride as there are days he wants to hoon (although will wait to be asked!)

He is good to do but can get fidgety with the farrier but if shod in the stable is fine.

So he needs to go somewhere that his new mum will be aware of the blindess but not let it change the way they deal with him as he's a cheeky character when he wants to be.

He'd probably suit a competent novice who wants a good happy hacker but maybe to dabble in a bit of dressage.

How much is he worth?

Thanks

Forgot to add that if he goes on loan I'd keep the insurance going so that he'd get a good years worth of treatment and not sure I'd sell without them having him for a wihle first - so paranoid that he'll go to a bad home!

£2000 - 3000 if he's reliable and honest? Spavin wouldn't put me off if I wanted a hacker/unaff dressage horse and it really isn't importanta unless you are doing something a bit more.

He is a bit quirky occasionally though and you have to be hard on him or he'll take the pee. That said, he's a very affectionate horse and such a character - which makes it harder!

He also needs a quiet rider.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I will be totally honest as I have read all your posts and am not sure whether the spavin has been diagnosed or not. £1250.

Glad I haven't offended

The blind in one eye wouldn't put me off, but having experience with spavins/arthritis - that would make me cautious. Fine as a happy hacker taking part in pleasure rides etc., but if I wanted to jump or take part in dressage, I would be wary TBH. That said, I have followed your posts right from when your first bought Ty and when he passed the vet, through to his escapade in the park

- he sounds a lovely character. Hope you find him the home he deserves.

I agree £1000

I'd find him a nice loan home and let him settle in for 6 months and then let them make you an offer if they want to keep him.

Yep I was actually thinking about £800, and I dont mean that to be offensive, surely you all know thats not my style, but realistically a half blind, aged thoroughbred, with quirks and a bone spavin is only worth a small amount.
I agree with the loan first, then buy although be warned one of mine was on 6 months loan to then be sold and 2 DAYS before the 6 months was up, he went barmy out on a farm ride, took off and bronced (totally out of character) girl ended up in hospital and then off work for 4 weeks, obviously he came home!

As lovely as he is I really dont think he is worth enough to sell. Think it would be kinder to put him on permenant loan and know that he isnt going to be passed on. If you try and sell him for what he is worth (I would say 700-800ish) then you will be unlikely to get the right sort of home, expect alot of calls wanting a very cheap horse

hes gorgeous i agree on the loan home.. i have a friend at my little yard who is looking for a loan horse too shortly but i guess having the spavin diagnosed first would be useful.

I wouldn't let him go anywhere without atleast 6 months loan first - he's too special to me for that.

I also want to get spavins diagnosed before I make any decisions too....

He should sell well at £800-1000

That's what I thought. Hopefully if I put loan with a view to buy then that will put off anyone who wants to make a quick buck.

My worry is that if you looked at him he wouldn't seem blind and he's a gorgeous looking horse - enough bute and he'd look sound at the moment so I'd hate him to get into the wrong hands....

So where is the best place to loan him from. Not sure whether to do horsemart as they don't have a loan section on line do they? I thikn I'll go for good old HHO! x
