DEFRA Statement

[ QUOTE ]
Horses are free to move, around a Europe which has no border controls, as are lice and midges. If you buy a horse in Europe you don't know where it has been!!

Britain should be concerned about all horses being imported not just 'rescues'.

[/ QUOTE ]

Just to clarify the situation - if you import a horse from, say, Holland, you need to have a health certificate before the horse can travel to the UK. However, due to the tripartite agreement, if you import a horse from France, there is no legal requirement for the horse to have ANY HEALTH CHECKS AT ALL before it comes to the UK. I had always assumed that any horse being imported to the UK had to have some form of health check, so I was gobsmacked to find that was not always the case!

Yes, the spirit of the TPA is to assume that a health check will be done. Which is not the same as insisting........

Which is the crux of the issue.

Really????

I always thought that they at least had to have a cursory (sp) vetting when they were brought over from France?
I am not very good at the whole eu thing and tbh i couldnt tell you which country was part of the eu and which wasn't!

It does disturb me greatly though to think that not even a basic check is done before they come over from France!

I know that the whole triparite thing is a loophole that has been needed for ages and I am really pleased that even some of the most anti anti's arent against the importation of fit horses. This has been my main bone of contention (sp again!) as long as the horses are fit, not carrying anything and the journey regs are adherred to fully then each to there own.

To clarify MC - the TPA covers France, Ireland and the UK only. Horses being imported from any other european country do require health checks and veterinary certification.

Well maybe I am totally stupid, but to me that is an outrage!

Finally we can agree on something and perhaps now you are starting to understand the concerns of the so called 'anti's'.

That may be so Ps, that is your stance and has always neem mine too, you and I both know though that there have been others with a hidden agenda... That however is maybe for another thread at a later date!

[ QUOTE ]

To be fair Meateater, you have only just brought vetting into the process, due in the main to the 'antis'.

I am very glad that you will be sticking to Defra regulations, this is really good news. I, like many others, don't have a problem with french rescue as long as the horse's welfare is the priority.

[/ QUOTE ]

No we have offered a full vetting to members if required from day one

Oh I did not realise that Meateater, I am just a little surprised that no one seemed to take you up the offer, perhaps you should have advertised it a little more, however, you have done so more recently - I know you offer them now because MC is in charge of arranging them. Will this include a Coggins test for any Rumanian or Spanish horses? I would imagine this would be a sensible move.
