Dental fees for someone who doesn’t know about horses

If it helps I found you this. These teeth came out easily because they were so diseased. It's a brutal procedure with a long recovery time for many horses. Some never do recover.

It’s not nice. I went to visit mine in the evening of the 3 surgery days and the first two (normal vet) were heart breaking.

Oh god that’s horrific.
I’ve definitely been told the wrong things about this. I couldn’t put him through that every 6-12 months that’d be brutal for him. I’ve had teeth out myself and begged the dentist to take them all so I didn’t have to go back, much less having a poor horse having to go through this constantly.
I’ve sent the video on to the family members so they can see for themselves.

I hope it helps. Stick to your guns . There's always moral support and information to be found on here. Thinking of ou and the family x

I hope it helps them come to the right decision. There are no negative welfare implications for an older horse with serious medical issues to be given a quiet and dignified end.

PTS by injection will take the remaining funds. If the family want a memento, some beautiful jewellery can be made with some tail hair. Ask if you would like recommendations.

I have an older horse and have left instructions as to what would happen to him if I were to die. A friend inherits him and a sum of money for his keep. The instructions are that I would like him to be happy and if he becomes unhealthy, he is to be PTS.

One tooth that perhaps became cracked would be treated, and there is money to cover this. Similar with a cut that required stitches. A major issue, such as yours, or a laminitis attack, or a colic that required intervention other than supportive, or a serious wound that required a joint flush would not be done. The horse would be PTS. This would be my wishes.

I don't suppose your relative would like the horse to be in a lot of pain, or you to be put into financial hardship.

Yes, I would use the final £500 to PTS.

I am surprised that more financial provision was not made and named for the horse's benefit? I think you have been more than accommodating by trying to keep the horse. Horses are money pits at the best of times. Even when loaned out, a horse needs someone to oversee.

I haven't read all the comments so apologies if already covered. My friend has just had her 22 yo geldings 9 front teeth removed due to gum disease, it cost £2k she took him in to the vets clinic for this. She has had to have 3 visits from the vet to clean & put some sort of dental gel in the sockets but incredibly the horse is absolutely fine and is able to graze and eat haylage as he has some back teeth and she's been riding him in a hackamore.

I’ve a friend who’s horse had EORTH, she pts before teeth removal but he did have other issues and was a 25 yr old 18.2! Vets wholeheartedly agreed with her decision. You do seem close to the horse as the passport is in your name so I am sorry your in this position as his custodian. Family may be a bit emotionally raw atm but you’re responsible for his welfare and there are definitely worse things for a horse than pts.

Just for clarity I’m not sure what you mean by every 6-12 months? Once removed the teeth won’t come back. Just incase you were thinking they did.

The poster explains upthread. The vet isn't prepared to extract all the affected teeth at once and says the rest will need to be done when they are bad enough to justify it. The horse and the family will be subject to repeated extractions unless the horse is PTS.

Because circumstances change and some people have no reserves and live pay check to pay check.

Oh, I get that, and have been there myself in the past. However, I would not have expected a non horse relative to take on my horse, who is in ill health, without having made provision.

For Rigs, I would have left instructions to PTS (in fact, I have done so, despite leaving money for keep for my animals, at the first sign he is not in good health).

Just because a relative wished for something to happen, does not make it fair to ask someone to be asked to do that.

I am a realist.

I have a 27 yr old section d mare I have owned since she was a yearling. At her last dental the young vet reported some deterioration in her back molars and mentioned if they deteriorated further they might need extracting. I wouldn't put her through that at 27 and if she needed that I would call it a day although I love her dearly.
