Hey all,

quick question but how much would you expect to put down as a refundable deposit for the use for a 3.5t horsebox for 1 day?

Thanks

It is about 15 years since we hired a box , but I think we paid about £50 deposit .
Hopefully you will have a few more current prices soon.

I have hired from two companies, one wanted £125 which I got back and the other required £500 which each time I used them they managed to find a reason to retain some of it

The £500 was tricky to find but I think the £125 was a bit low, £200 or thereabouts seems fair

WelshD - Would you mind messaging me the name of the one who wants £500 please, as the company I'm looking to use want £500 and this seems very expensive compared to the £99 hiring cost!!

When I've hired, they asked for a % of the hiring fee upfront then kept a credit card until the box was returned. £500 seems excessive.

When I looked into hiring mine out it was the insurance company that told me how much deposit I had to take. It got so silly with terms and conditions I gave up !!.

We hired a box recently and we paid the basic fee up front £85.00. Then added extra's on the day, cdw, insurance and extra time.

No way would I be able to pay £500 up front - that's what their insurance is for.

I haven't been asked for a deposit when I've hired, just the daily rate. However I know the person I hire from fairly well, not sure whether she charges other people a deposit.

I hired one this week when I needed to go out and my truck was stuck at home. It was £99 for the day and a £750 holding deposit until I took it back :)

We hire out 3.5 ton boxes in the midlands and I think there is some confusion as to whats being asked for. There is only one mainstream insurance company that covers self drive hire and we all use them through various brokers. LV impose a minimum 500 insurance excess, some hire companies require a pre authorization to cover this in full although we dont and we are frequently at the losing end of it due to failure to refuel and vehicle damage.
Our holding deposit on booking is a non refundable 25% with a 25.00 minimum, this is to cover our costs on lost bookings.

I also own a self drive hire Horsebox company and £500 is stipulated by the insurance company.

However I 'pre auth' the debit/credit card so customers don't actually have to hand over £500. If there's no damage to the box the amount is never taken. It's the same system as in hotels.

Should of said my hire is also £99 and £500 may seem a lot compared to the the cost of hire, but not compared to the value of the Horsebox - around £25k
