Deposit when buying a horse

Is is usual for a dealer to ask for a deposit prior to the vetting? Not bought a horse for a while, so maybe out of date.

I would expect it, It is a commitment, and shows you are comitted.
If you change your mind, He may not have shown the horse to somebody who would have brought it.
As a private seller, I would ask for one, having been messed about in the past, unless they were on the phone there and then to vet and booking a vetting for a couple days.

I paid a deposit before vetting on one occasion. Horse failed vetting and they refunded my deposit.

That was the only horse I have ever had vetted, it was also the most expensive horse I've ever looked at. Went back to buying cheap and cheerful and taking a risk after that.

I paid a £200 deposit on a horse sold by a small time dealer. Failed the vetting, decided to wait. Several weeks later horse was still lame, so decided to carry on looking. Seller agreed to return my deposit.

That was the 17th April. I'm having to take her to a small claims court.
