Derby House In Administration?

What a shame Olney has closed. I remember it opening. I have one the original saddles that Richard designed. It is still used on occasion. All the stuff for my first horse was bought there, and I still have most of it - and its in use!

Who cares? I've bought next to nothing from them since DH changed hands then moved from the little saddlery in Parbold. Its a miracle they've lasted this long tbh making "business decisions" like joining forces with blooming Jordan of all people. Whoever runs the show just doesn't seem to have a clue what it is that horsey people want IMO. I'm glad I've got better horse shops much closer to home and I won't miss DH is its current form if it goes.

I ordered a fleece dog coat from them via Amazon the other day and it arrived yesterday so I guess their online business is still operating just fine :)

Wow, if it goes that's the end of an era. Derby House was in business when I was horsey back in the 1970s (based at Parbold, as I remember, near where I rode) and is still around now I'm horsey again. :D

Of course, I was always horsey in my heart, just my body wouldn't let me.....

Their original shop at Parbold was fantastic but in my personal view they lost their way when they moved and expanded. Shame if they have gone though.

For me it was a enormous crying shame when Moreton saddlery sold out to Derby House as well. Moreton was never the same when they moved from their beautiful, cramped, crammed and friendly premises in Oxford street. Love it when it was there, the smell, the atmosphere and they always had exactly what you wanted, regardless on size, colour or brand.

Didn't Derby House take over CAM Equestrian? I seem to remember reading that on H&H and a tack shop owner that I know who gets the ETG (Equestrian Trade Gazette), said that ages ago too. If you go on the dreaded HorseRugs4U website, they have the CAM Equestrian logo on their site: http://www.horserugs4u.com/

If DH own Horserugs4U, that would explain everything...

DH opened a store in Mold (North Wales) about 18 months ago and it was dreadful!!! Full of KP stuff which is not my sort of thing at all, and in terms of equipment for your horse, it was very poor in choice. I didn't go back and within no time it was closed again, so a costly and pointless exercise there I'd say.

What wrong with horserugs4u? Never ordered off them or even looked at the website seen them on Facebook..

Do a search here on H&H and you'll see why!! Two people I know have ordered from them and had to go through their credit card merchants to get their money back due to them never sending anything. They don't seem to carry any stock but wait till they get enough orders and then order the stock if you are lucky. Barge and pole spring to mind.

You don't have to look very far to find plenty of answers to your question. Having said that they might be ok now.

Back to the original post, you really have to be careful about starting rumours about well known companies on a forum like this, unless you are sure of your facts. I know they were closing (or have already closed) most of their shops to concentrate on mail order only. This doesn't mean they are out of business, unless something has happened very recently. Posts like this won't help a business survive and could even have been started by a rival!

I personally wouldn't be posting about a business potentially having problems unless you know for a fact that it is 100% true. There has been mention about some other equestrian companies on here about closing down and for a fact they haven't! It could detrimental to their livelihoods this idle talk when business is tougher out there than it has ever been....

Statement direct from them says
Derby House has not gone into administration. We have recently been reorganising the business which resulted in the closure of some Derby House stores so that we could concentrate on our Wrightington Store and our online and mail order business. We continue to strive to provide the highest levels of service to all our customers and will continue to do so into the future.
So no worries guys!

I've had nothing but good service from dh my latest bargain was woof cc boots for less than half price excellant boots too also musto snugs for under £30!
Glad to hear the rumours are un founded

Just to note that if any business is in administration and still trading then they have to state that on all orders. The administrator is appointed to oversee trading whilst protecting the business from creditors and trying to find a buyer.

Glad this isn't the case with Derby House.

I'm another one who wishes they have never touched Olney Saddlery, used to love going there.

Going to DH in parbold used to be a treat where you would get quality items from knowledgeable staff, yes there was a price tag to match that too!! However these days it's nothing more than expensive crap!! The customer service is virtually none existent, I nearly bought a saddle in the sale for just shy of £2k however was told that because it's a sale item if it doesn't fit then I could only have a credit note and not a refund!!!! Wtf!!!! Needless to say I told them where they could put the saddle!! I try and stay well away from the place now as everytime I do nip in for something I always end up disgruntled by something in there!!!

I'd heard about this some time ago and was under the impression that they had sold off some of the poorere performing stores to get straight??

I'm near the Wrightington shore and still love a trip out to DH!! I find the sales people friendly and really helpful. I think they did themselves a slight dis-service by promoting Katie Prices' clothing (Chavy?!), espeically when considering that they usually aim towards the higher end of the market...but generally spreaking, I have always been happy with my purchases.

In fact, I recently bought my new horse a DH own make turnout rug. As she is new, I didn't want to spend a fortune on a more expensive one in case she turned out to be a rug-trasher....I have been so impressed with it that I went back last week to buy the heavy-weight version and next month I am going to buy one for my other horse too!

I have experienced similar problems with wrong sizes and no stock with dh, I now use olddairysaddlery.co.uk for my online shopping.

Don't know about the rest, but my local shut down in August, I think :( I miss it.

Me too assuming you mean olney, :-(

That's mine too! :( Gutted. It was the nearest saddlery to me (aside from the dated one in Bedford run by a real dragon of a woman ;) ) - do you know where any other local saddleries are now as the only other one I know is Equisense (I think) in Ampthill? Otherwise I'm doomed solely to online shopping!

Puzzles, have you tried RB Equestrian near Leighton Buzzard? A nice place and they have a loyalty card scheme. I bought a Fiona hat from them and got a voucher for £5 off my next item which I thought was a nice surprise.
