A friend and I are planning a trip to Derby House, but we're not sure which store to visit, I understand the Lancashire store is the 'flagship shop' but its probably just a bit too far for us to go (we travelling from Leicestershire). We were thinking about the Moreton-in-Marsh - does anyone know if this is a 'large' tack shop, ie worth travelling for and hour or so to? I've been to the Matlock one, and its not very big, so we've crossed that off the list.

we'd normally go to Tower Farm or Townfields, but fancy going somewhere a bit different. We'd considered the new Robinsons shop, but i'm not keen on the requisit stuff they specialise in. If anyone can recommend any other 'large' tack shops not too far from Leicestershire that would be great too.

Depends what you are after, but personally I wouldn't travel more than an hour for the DH shop in M-in-M - I work in gloucestershire and will stop off there if I'm in the area, but I have found it a bit hit and miss. Sometimes they have what I want, sometimes they don't!
 
Good for clothing and rugs, but a bit limited on tack.
A huge disappointment considering what it could be like.
Closer to your home, there's quite a nice place just outside Newark, on the A46 part of a farm shop complex, Sorry not sure what it's called!
 
go to robinsons on your way to derby house, its only 2 mins off the motorway and yes they sell a lot of tat but some one told me the other day they have a boutique bit that sells ariat, john whitaker, kingsland etc. derby house in lancs is fab, huge store, loads of variety sometimes have marque open in the middle for a rug rummage which is always worth a look, and the cafe is fab too!!!
 
ok, well we're going to be after clothing etc rather than tack, so maybe it will be ok, not sure about the one outside Newark - i'll have to get on google and see what i can find, thanks for your help!
 
hmmm, now i dont know what to do - maybe worth the extra half hour/hour to go up to Lancashire then... i really want to go to a DH shop as they have some of their own brand breeches i really want. Thanks everyone for your help - keep any other recommendations coming.
 
we thought about Olympia - but its waaay to difficult to get to. We're trying to avoid travelling too far, we've got our first affiliated dressage competition at Hargate (+ i'm taking my mare up to Novice level for the first time - nervous? me? Yes very!) the day after we're planning to go shopping - so need to be home fairly early to bath distusting skebald bog pony!

keep em coming guys - I've got money burning a hole in my pocket for the first time ever!
 
i live 20 minutes from DH @ writington and 35 mins from robinsons haydock.. it would be a good day out if you did both, but how long would it take you? both stores have a fab clothing range btw
 
I personally hate the Lancs DH store ... it is all show and no substance.

If you're into spending ridiculous money for breeches ie. pikeur etc., then it is good.
If you want proper, everyday kit, then it'd be a wasted journey. I only go there if I can't get what I need closer and I only live about 20 mins away.

As for Robinsons, I wouldn't waste my petrol ... it's hideous!!!

There used to be a real treasure trove of a saddlery in Ashbourne, can't remember the name though sorry.
 
I went to the Derby House shop at Moreton with a friend a few weeks ago and have to say I was very disappointed. None of the boots, rugs or the bridle I wanted were in stock. The staff weren't very helpful and it was generally a bit of a let down.

It might be too far for you to travel but I have heard good things about Dove House Farm (near Whipsnade) or the Eileen Douglas tackshops are great - I go to the one in Henley but they have a few of them.
 
for clothing, the shop in Olney (is it still DH?) is good, they sell joules, pikeur etc, and one of the best in the area for 'quality' items. It's not that big though.

I'd personally be heading for robinsons, or the bigger DH.
 
thanks everyone - so its looking like the Lancashire DH is the best option, but its a bit further than we were planning - i suppose we could always stay closer to home and do a tour of the local shops - Sharnford Lodge, followed by Tower Farm and then onto Townfields before headding home... but i really want a pair of the DH breeches (before sunday). will have to have a think with friend.
 
Twinkle_Poppy - i was under the impression this is quite a small shop - and because we want to 'make a day of it' i'm not sure its going to be big enough...
 
what about Eland Lodge at Draycott in the Clay, just off the A50 which should be on you way to the M6. Good selction of premium brands as well. You would probably be better to go to Rideaway as well, straight up the A1.

Ditto this. I hardly ever buy anything but its pretty for a nice wander round.

But the cafe prices are extortionate!

Derby House for a mooch round, Robinsons on the way home for some buckets, etc, and their cafe, then Estate Supplies to actually buy stuff, except saddles, damn back up to Saddles Direct.

DH at Moreton in Marsh is my "local" ie 20 min away. TBH I think it is fairly "rubbish" - hardly ever have what you want in stock - better off to buy online!

Towerfields is nice but how about trying Horse Sense at Solihull? Loads of stock - tack & clothes! I can normally be guaranteed to find something lush there! & I am a picky b*gger!!!!
 
I thought both Moreton Saddlery and Olney Sadlery were much better before they were bought by Derby House. Having visited both I think you could well save yourself a wasted journey by ordering off th web.
 
Just had a thought - Coleman Croft near St Albans/Hatfield (just off the A1) used to be good. Not been there for a few years though.
 
I live 5 mins from Derby House in Wrightington and yes, it is a nice shop however i rarely buy anything when i go there! Its good if you dont have access to quality tack/clothing shops near you so is worth a visit.

If you do travel up though.....Oakfield saddlery is not too far from DH and has far more clothing at better prices..... my sis travels from south wales with a shopping list from the village she lives in ....just to go to Oakfield! (check website)
 
i love the one olney it is over three floors i live twenty mins from it and i would go there than the 5 mins it takes me to get to tower farm in eb. of course you could go to horseatack in mk or drotwitch, the one in mk has a very good range of stuff
