Did you keep your Horses name?

Stuff and nonsense, all this superstition about bad luck :rolleyes:

When I got J he was called Curly (honestly, give the poor beast a break!) so I changed it to Jasper, which has been shortened to Jazz, Jas, J, JJ and everything you can think of since. I've had him 12 fabulous years and any bad luck we encounter now cannot possibly be determined to be related to his name change! I was going to change Ferg's name when I got him, but he does suit Fergie, and I couldn't come up with anything better for him, so he stays as he is. Darach on the other hand does need a new stable name...
 
My mare was called Shanna (and still is on her passport) bought her at 3 and renamed her immediately as really didnt like it and she just didnt look like a 'Shanna' whatever they look like - anyway all feedback i have had is she looks like her 'new' name so it was obviously a good move...

Not sure about the bad luck thing, we have had ups and downs and many a trip to A&E but thats more young horse than name related!! :) Oh and dodgy rider!
 
....oh and don't get me started on pet names !! Pickle, Piccalinna, princess, pretty , cow bag and foaly gets called Monkey nuts (will shorten to monkey when he is gelded ) rouge, poppet and menace !!!
 
on his passport he was called Minor (min ore) but the dealer called him Junior
Neither of these I liked so called him 'Micah' (meeka)

His show name is Minor (minor) Miracle as to me he is my minor miracle
 
The only name I changed the horse turned out to be a nightmare - but I'm convinced it was a complete coincidence. I'd happily change a horses name again. I haven't changed either of my current 2 even though I get a lot of stick for them because they suit them so well!

My share Horse is called Nelly, she already had that name when she was bought, owner wasn't sure she liked it at first but she kept it. Name really suits her.

I know nelly and she was called Lilly first of all but it got changed because there was another Lilly at the yard at the time, She got called Nelly as in Nervous Nelly being the wimp that she was/is :D
 
my first horse didnt have a name so she became ebony.

the horse i have now was called finding nemo or nemo for short and as hes 16.1 tb x i really didnt think nemo suited him so we changed it to finley kind of fish related tho he very rarely gets called that usually gets things that i couldnt possibly repeat on here
 
The one I just bought is registered as Green Collar and stable name is Humphrey. Which has been changed to James the giant peach. He's fluffy and huge and looks like a James so that's what he will be! *shrug* Would love to know what he was called previously though.
 
Che (racing name Royal Cliche) had the stable name Gale when he came to me, I am told Mr G Cliche is a footballer!! I cannot stand at the gate and shout "Gale" to my handsome beast so I settled on Che thinking it was quite original. Arrived at the yard to discover the big coloured mare is called Chey(enne)!!
 
I'm stupidly superstitious so I couldn't change a horse's name anyway, but I liked my mare's name and she's the only horse I've had to it hasn't been a problem for me yet (she's called Lou).

"Che" just makes me think of berets and cigars (you've heard of the Argentinian revolutionary, right?) :p
 
My horse was called Skinny when I bought her. How mean is that?

She's now called Rabbit - much better :D

She's pretty lucky the advert on tv where Mary the cow dreams of being a horse wasn't on when I bought her. Rabbit is the image of Mary the cow :D
 
Alfie used to be Toby, and Milo used to be called Lucky (he kinda was lucky the state we found him in!)

Purely selfish reasons for changing names, wanted to put our own names to them :D and they were completely unhandled babies when we got them so I'm pretty sure they didn't mind ;)
 
Changed all of my horses names :) Don't care if it's bad luck, I'm not sure they know their names anyway! (especially if they come from dealers)

If they came from a long term home, but we end up changing their name, we try to make sure it's similar - eg. Maestro became Solo and Rusty Roo became just Roo!

Rescue boy came with the name Harlequin, which I like, but wanted a new name for his new start, and he became Oscar. Josh became Piper, because I know someone called Josh and I'm not their biggest fan :p Bryn became Bryn because he was called Pinky, and before that Stumpy, and I refuse to yell either across a field!!
 
Mine didn't come with a stable name, he was a wild 2 year old living in a field with his brothers and sisters. When I got his passport I found out he'd been named Perivale Hunter, he wasn't a Perry or a Hunter to me, so I managed to add Indigo to his name, so he's now Perivale Hunter Indigo. Indie for short!

I've heard it's meant to be bad luck changing a horses name, but hey, I'm sure the horse doesn't care!
 
Mine came with a Registered Name of Heartbreaker (hated the connotations) and a stable name of Apple, because he is an Appaloosa....Sigh.

Changed his name to Nevada as it means Snow Capped in Spanish (like his butt!) Vardi for short.

His show name (if we ever get round to it) will be "Heartbreak in Nevada"
 
I've changed some, but not others. Prim(rose) came with Prim, and it stuck, even though she's far from being prim and proper! Indi (passport name) has mostly stuck, though sometimes I call her Moose, as she has a large head. I bred Toad (A Glorious Venture) myself, and though she was called Glory at first, she was such a swine that Toad was more appropriate.

My newest one, Argen Tina was Tina when she came, but I don't like giving people names to animals, so she is now Xena.

Where yard did you know her from? We didn't know that! will have to let her owner know.

Yes she is 15 now and still just as spooky :rolleyes:

I was also told this so have never changed any of my animals names.... until I inherited a cat called Babe..... I am sorry but I just couldn’t do it!! Ended up calling her Daisy which suited her much more and got fewer odd looks when I called her for her tea lol!

RIP Daisy gone but never forgotten

I didnt change either of my twos names either,just vary it a bit,ie ffion / fifi ,Flash to Flashes
 
I am not that superstitious, so have changed mines name.
He came with – Posh name, Kereru (New Zealand pigeon!!)
Stable name, Kermit (frog!!), just had to change to Kaiser Chief/Kai
 
When I got my girl I wasn't sure whether to change her name or not. It was choose from Ethel, which I knew her as for six months beforehand as I got her from work, or Joy, which her owners named her as her mum is Kallistas Pride, so Pride and Joy :rolleyes: I guess I could have chosen something else, but Ethel suits her so much :D and I couldn't change it after knowing her as it for six months.

I'm rubbish at thinking of names so unless a horse comes to me unnamed, it'll probably keep it's current name :p
 
We have changed all our horses namrs because they didn't suit them

We had Maggie which was changed to Kitty B, Thorn which was changed to
The Brewster and Shadow, who was passed from pillar to post is now Mr Tom
and assured of a home for life
 
Two of mine were bought as foals so I named them.

When I tried my TB I asked what he was called and they said 'That one' while pointing across the field at him :rolleyes: so despite being 8 years old he didn't really have a name apart from his racing name so I named him too.

If I bought a horse now with a ridiculous name, one I didn't like or one that didn't suit it then I would change it, if I felt they knew their 'old' name I would try and change it to something that sounded similar :)
