So not necessarily a horsey post.... but i do want to lose weight so that I look good on my steed! I look back at photos of last year and i was so much thinner!

Any tips!? Apart from the obvious - eat healthy and do more exercise...

I really struggle sticking to diets :(

I did it a relatively simple and old fashioned way - counting calories. To start with i tried what they did on a CH4 prog a few years ago - aim for 1200 kcals a day for say 4 weeks. It isn't actually that hard to be honest. I also cut out alcohol during the week which really helped. I tried not to snakc between meals but if you do snack, eat thinsg like fruit, some chopped veg (ie carrots etc - easy to take to work) or even some nuts etc. I have not cut out things like pasta, rice or cheese (i am vegetarian so it limits my diet some what) but I did cut down and also bought a load of quorn things which filled me up.

If you eat meat though then try swap any red meat for the likes of chicken, turkey and fish. Much healthier. I have not actually exercised as such (i should as want to lose more weight - have currently loast over a stone (have done it slowly though and have been slack recently! lol). I did get a new job last year though and it involves a bout a 2mile walk daily so i think that has helped. If you can even add some walking in to your daily routine this will help a fair bit.

Oh and to add i try and aim for 1200 to 1500 kcals a day now or thereabouts. I know they say a woman should have 2000 kcals a day but in all honesty I think i would gain eating that much every day!

Plus - always make sure you have breakfast. Helps get the metabolism going!

Thank you that's really helpful :) I am a meat eater but I actually prefer Quorn... and often eat it anyway! so i guess that's a good start :)

I used to drink a lot of coke. even diet colas will increase your hunger so cut those out.

Small life style changes can make a huge difference. If you drink a lot of tea and coffee try changing the sugar for sweetener. Cut down on your carbohydrates especially breads and cereals! Change your morning breakfast to yogurt and fruits or something.
Have three meals a day and try and have no more than two snacks.

Think about your habits, even write down and calculate what you are eating and see where you can make changes

Have you got an i phone by any chance?

I have never had to worry about my weight, I was that irritating size 8 who ate what ever i wanted and did no exercise....until i hit 30 that was!

I was convinced i was eating fine but to my horror my clothes were getting tighter and tighter!
still i swore blind i was really healthy and not eating too much, then i got an ap on my phone which i put everything i eat in- its easy and i dont have to diet it just helps me keep track (and omg was i ever putting some food away ;-@)

I cant diet, i'm not good at exercise but this ap is fab it has helped me no end- i still pig out sometimes but as a rule if by the end of the day i have calories left to eat then i use them wisely on chocolate!

Sadly i don't have an iphone! :(

the same has happened to me lately.... my clothes have started to get tighter and tighter without me realising... and finally i've decided i need to shed some pounds!!

don't mention the word chocolate.... PLEASE!!! ;)

As a few have said, cutting out the so called "empty" calories really helps - that is fizzy drinks and alcohol. Also agree with having breakfast. Hot water and lemon is supposed to get the metabolism going and a slow-release carbohydrate (like porridge) will keep you going and feeling fuller longer.

Only other thing I can think of, if like me you get carb withdrawal symptoms and get sick of salad, is to have an open sandwich for lunch and use brown bread, therefore at least only using 1 slice of bread

Good luck

Frankly, diets never seem to work for me! The answer I've found? Portion control! Eat normally, and ideally in a balanced diet, just eat less of it! Don't snack throughout the day, control the amount you eat, try to eat less sugar, drink plenty because it helps you feel fuller.. If you're really craving a snack, chew some gum! If you get that sugar free stuff which claims to aid plaque build up, it's also good for your teeth ;) it's what works for me anyway, can't be dealing with yo-yo-ing on and off diets xx

I lost nearly two stone simply by eating less and by that I don't mean anorexia but cutting down on portion sizes, cutting out snacks or instead of chocolate, having a cereal bar with chocolate on already or having a yoghurt which I love anyway. Three meals a day isn't hard once you're used to it. I used to have a sandwich plus crisps plus chocolate for lunch ... Now after the sandwich I stop and wait for ten minutes. If I'm still hungry then I might have something else like a packet of wotsits at 99 kcal instead of mckoys at 200kcal.

I am not hard enough on myself to do any sort of specific diet where I have to eat less of the stuff I love like bread, potato and pasta. This way works for me and you don't even realise you're eating less and you're not denying yourself the things you enjoy. You have to be disciplined at the beginning but it changes your eating habits in as much as how much you eat. I found after a week or two I was craving fruit rather than chocolate to fulfill my sweet tooth and I wasn't missing chocolate at all. Good luck however you go about it.

I too have just got the app on iPhone, it's really good! I got it last week and have stuck to max of 1200 calories a day. U don't realise how many calories are in things! I used to eat really late too which didn't help! I'v put on 2 stone since before I was pregnant and really feel the extra weight, especially on my knees!!! Although iv been naughty today and eaten lots of my birthday cake!!!

QR but I know some people have mentioned calorie counting and portion control. I used www.weightlossresources.co.uk as a great way of doing both. It's an online database where you record everything your eat and it tells you how many calories you've eaten. It really opens your eyes to how many calories are in foods - its amazing what you think of healthy foods such as pasta or rice have lots of calories in fairly small amounts. It costs about £10 a month but so well worth it to see where the calories are. I lost over a stone in just over month by writing everything down on this site but it never once felt like I was on a diet because if I had biscuit I just adapted my next meal to take account of it.

Thanks for all of your responses! I'm feeling quite exited about starting my ''diet'' tomorrow!

I'll do what many of you have said and 'cut down' rather than diet. I'm planning on going for a short run every day too (I used to do this and quite enjoyed it on sunny evenings!)..

say bye bye to mrs blobby! ;)

there's a diet thread stickied in Soapbox.
having tried a lot of other things, i swear by the Dukan diet (low-carb, low-fat), it's awesome, i don't have to go hungry, i'm not obsessed by food on it (as I am if i try counting calories, for some reason) and i love the results.

what app??

Its called My Fitness Pal- Its free- the other thing i like is you can put things like 30 mins of riding in and it will subtract the calories burned.
Lets face it your i phone is rarely far from your side and this is easy to do...yes i'm slightly obsessed at the minute!

Try the Harcombe Diet by Zoe Harcombe, it's absolutely brilliant. I've lost 12lbs on it so far (5'5", started at 10st 5lbs, now 9st 7lbs) and a male friend of my mother in law's, who was saying no diet ever works for him, has now lost 2 and a half stone on it and had to eat his words!

Lose the carbs - sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice etc etc.

Eat more protein

Eat regularly (I eat 5 small 'meals' a day)

Eat the right foods (lean protein, veg, salad, fruit in moderation, good fats)

Don't calorie count and don't get obsessed with low fat (it's a myth)

There is a 'diet' thread stickied at the top of Soapbox if you want support and advice :D

I lost 2.5 stone (25% of my starting body weight) on the Food Doctor diet. More a way of changing your eating habits than a weight loss diet.

If you don't have an iPhone there are calorie counting apps for other phones too. I have an Android phone and the app I've got counts calories, fat, protein and carbs. It also counts your exercise.

I know a lot of people at the moment swear by weight watchers pro points but I think the key is paying attention to what you are eating and your portions.

Ww has never worked for me, I know lots of people swear by it. I have got my fitness pal but forget to use it!!!!

I am thinking of trying herbalife, pricey but people ivhave seen on it look great

Ooo How much have you lost? I'm about to start the Dukan diet today!

I am a fattie and struggle with my weight and find I can lose 2-3 pounds a week if i eat sensibly through the week. I eat porridge for breakfast (though i confess its the golden syrup oats so simple cos I cba to make real stuff which fills me up all day), soup or salad for luch with some fruit and a packet of snack o jacks, then fish/chicken with veg/stir frys etc for dinner.
at the weekend i tend to treat myslef to bread.

Now this all works lovely but my downfall is wine and crisps at the weekend so I end up putting the 3 pounds back on so never lose any weight - if i am good and make it through the weekend on vodka or something then all is well and the weight drops off. I ride 5/6 times a week but also do davinas workouts 3 times a week or jog (if i am being really good and have the time! which is not very often these days!) I do have to exercise loads though to tone up as well as lose weight!

Right well i'm off to start my diet now and have just realised i have eaten a chocolate cookie for breakfast! No more treats for me today!

I've recently lost two stone after spending the last 10 years hauling it about post childbirth! For whatever reason I never returned to my pre-baby fit self until now but now that I have I feel great and regret not doing it sooner!

I cut out bread, pasta, alchohol, anything sweet, you get the picture and also went vegetarian. I also try to 'move' in some physical way everyday so I go to the gym, ride, swim or start the day like today by poo picking and cutting down nettles for an hour.

Im on this way of eating for life, bread just doesnt work for me and Im convinced its made me hold onto weight, ditto other heavy carbs, I'll have them occasionaly but know that unless you are very physical they cant be a main part of any weight mainting or reducing diet.

So budding dieters, I say go for it in whatever form you find sustainable, find something you love to do physically and you will find you stick at it, take up jogging when you hate to run and you will not! Dont kill yourself on restricting your diet either, again do what you think you can manage for at least say 6 months, dont eat grapefruit for a week and then wonder why you regain double when you stop!
