Can anyone tell me why muscles are called digital please? I understand all the others but not this one and no amount of Google is helping !

Digital relates to digits, ie. fingers and toes. Because of evolutionary development horses stand on their middle toe, they did have more toes but they disappeared or fused. The digital muscles relate to the control of this digit and lie in the upper part of the horses legs . In humans the equivalent areas would be the forearm and shin , which is where our rather more numerous digital muscles lie.
