I think you have just found out why the pony was basically abandoned in a field. You might be able to find him a home as a companion, but how do you know how long he will stay there? You KNOW he is unrideable. No doubt the person who sold him to you knew it full well too. Do you want to perpetuate the lie? I'd say PTS I'm afraid.

JM07 please stop lowering yourself into biting back - you are a far better person than that. It's funny though - I have some egg custards, can I join in?
smile.gif

If we get back to the pony for a minute (sorry to interrupt and all that), am I right in assuming Potters is an abbatoir (SP)? Never heard of it, that's all.

Anyway, whatever, this pony needs to be PTS or taken to Potters. I don't think for one minute that you would actually put it in a sale and risk it being sold on to potentially hurt someone, would you?

The pony, as you know, would end up being doped up to the eyeballs and being sold by someone as a childs pony, and then either being PTS anyway or costing the owners thousands in vets bills or worse - being sold on again and again and again.

I hate, hate, hate the fact that people think there is this pink and fluffy world where all unrideable ponies end up as a companion in a loving home with someone who will love and look after them to the end of their days. IT DOESN'T EXIST!!!!!

Or at least not for the majority of horses it doesn't. Yes, I know that there ARE people out there who will keep an old horse to the end of it's days whatever happens - I have done this myself and am grateful that I was in a position to do so. Indeed, my current mare (12yrs old) is with me for life (as far as one can guarantee that) due to laminitis and traffic issues (!) BUT - sometimes the best thing for the horse really is to realise when it is time for it to go to save it from a tough life in the future. Just because it isn't old does not mean that the time isn't now.

But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, am I?
smile.gif

I agree with many & say PTS - if you pass him on where's he going to end up? or worse still he could injure someone with his bronking. Doesn't sound like he has a bright future so I'd be thinking of him long term.

I haven't read more than half way down the thread, but I have every confidence that JM will do what she considers, first and foremost, to be in the best overall, long term interest of the pony

As far as I can see this pony has no happy future if sold on, the responsible action is to have him pts.

JM07 - you have more experience than a lot of us will ever have, if you say the pony is unfit for sale and as you have described I'd agree then I think your only option is Potters. You have given him every chance, investigated his problems, if he has lami & kissing spines he is unlikely to be comfortable all the time even as a companion. You have a business to run and the Potters option gives you some return as well as ensuring this lad doesn't end up in the wrong place. It's not everyones choice but at the end of the day is it really worse than considering it a method of carcass disposal? (says the woman who has all hers buried )

It is worse than having it PTS because of the travel, which won't be comfortable for an un-buted pony in this state. In a production-line style environment there will almost certainly be more experienced people to slaughter than any vet is to PTS but it is not a pleasant place for an animal to end it's life and when an animal doesn't go quickly the first time there is often less attention paid so it can suffer for longer.

Personally I'd never risk it for the sake of the money.

I know this opinion hasn't made this particular forum newbie popular but as I used to have to tell traders in a bank when they'd lost money I'm pretty used to being yelled at for other peoples' bad luck.

FWIW I benefit enormously from the experience of other forum members, including JM07, learning a lot. On the relatively limited areas where I am well informed though I'm biting the bullet and allowing myself to be sworn at!

The responsible and humane thing to do would be to have the horse put down where it is kept at present.

I am told that Potters have a waiting list of about 3 months at the moment.

I actually have been part of a group who studied different euthanasia methods on horses and cattle. What I know of Potters it doesn't work to a production line system like that in cattle or sheep lines so the slaughter stress shouldn't apply in the same way, there will naturally be a degree of anxiety. I'd disagree about the animal not going first time - I promise I do have more experience in this area than I'd even like to admit and would be happy that if the first attempt was not successful it would be promptly rectified. I don't think this pony is in any condition that it would be uncomfortable to travel to Potters or I'm sureJM07 wouldn't have considered it.

ThursdayNext; I'm really struggling to understand exactly what type of abattoir your family ran?
frown.gif
Because it sounds like absolutely nothing like the abattoirs I have ever visited
confused.gif
, which are well run, competent, animals are perfectly calm, fed and watered before quietly and efficiently being taken into another room from whence they do not return.

I guess if this is your experience of abattoirs then I can see why you may feel disturbed - it would definitely disturb me if any of my family members ran a business as inadequately and inhumanely as the one as you are implying yours do/did.

FFS give it a rest will you yes we have all seen the video and videos like it over and over again and none of the horses look distressed when the time comes for mine it will be the hunt that dispatches him, but I have no problem with potters it provides a much needed service.

JM07 is not cruel she takes on other peoples rejects and gives them a chance if they can be they go on to make bloody good ponys if not they go to potters and never suffer..

Thursdaynext...

he will travel less than 45 minutes with a net of haylege..he is booked in on the next session..i spoke to Potter myself..who agreed with me that is wasn't practical nor right, to keep him without medication any longer than needed so i'm allowed to squeeze him in over their quota..with DEFRA approval...the next time i could get him in would have been in 2 weeks time, so he's going in the next session.

he will wait on the lorry with my OH, who will take him himself into the Hall..where he will be met by the guy holding the rifle in the AA video, who happens to be a member of he same hunt as us, and a thoroughly professional man..and a horse owner to boot!..my OH will wait until it's all over, be given back his halter..and home we go.

no pain, no stress, no fuss.

the pennies i receive from him have already been earmarked to help bring home some other unfortunate pony who needs a good start in life

point two..your information is incorrect i'm afraid...its 2 weeks for non emergancies...

I cannot see that anyone could possibly have a problem with this, sounds like a stress free end for a pony who could have faced at best an uncertain future without your intervention.
