Yep, very common practice on pony showing yards - or at least it used to be, I havent been around the 'scene' for a while!
Of the ones Ive seen trussed up like this, side reins have been used rather than the running cord seen in these pics, and they havent been so tight that the horse/pony has been in rolkur.
Its a vile practice which should never be tolerated!

willing that poor animal to rub his poll against the stable wall until he can get the headpiece over his ears and shake that bridle off.

the urge to reach through that photo and help him is immense :(

All of the five freedoms are flouted in this practice btw.
http://www.horsetrust.org.uk/News2008/Welfare-Protocol-Opens-Door-for-Horse-Rescues/

Quoted from above link

"The five freedoms are:

Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.

Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.

Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering."

I was once told to do this to my 4yo by a showing doyen - needless to say I didn't do it. They do this a lot with show ponies, gives a totally false outline but looks pretty. Sadly the showing judges don't spot the false outline, if they did then this practice would not continue :(

My YO told me that she bought her daughter's horse after seeing him trussed up like that in the stable. Apparently his owners had been told it would develop his topline - she told them it wouldn't in no uncertain terms and took the poor horse off their hands when they decided to sell.

A few years ago when I was doing a different job, I was lost and couldn't find the farm I was supposed to be going to. I stopped at a place (didn't know it was a well known showing/breaking/schooling/stud at the time) and was looking round for someone to ask directions. I looked in some stables and there were several horses tied like this. This is a yard which every year qualifies their horses for HOYS. They have a very impressive website which talks about their "sympathetic" training methods. Every time I hear of someone sending their horse there to be broken/schooled, I cringe.....

I'd like to put a bit in their mouth and then tie their hands behind their backs, loop the bit lines through that, lie them on their front and tie their legs up bent behind them and leave them for a few hours , ignorant cruel a r s e h o l e s

These places should be named and shamed

That is fairly normal on showing yards.

Plenty of other methods exist... E.g. Tying weights to legs so they produce a flashy action...

I once saw this about 30 years ago on a old traditional breaking yard thought it was dumb then still do now I just can't understand what they hope to achieve.

That is ghastly its a horrible horse sport how any one can 'admire' horses going like that is beyond me.

I had my rant on this last month :p
http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=506131

The videos are the tip of the iceberg. What they actually do to make the horses walk this was is much uglier :(

Found another lovely pic on FB today (not from the UK, I believe)

If any of us find such practices - take pics and circulate them (without naming the yard) and walk away from the yard forever. It's the only way we can fight back.....

OMG that's awful. Poor horse looks so uncomfortable and in pain. :(

And i thought the first picture was bad :( poor horse the pain it must be in :(
I'm lost for words that someone could do that to any creature :(

Seeing that latest pic you posted Oberon was what made me wonder how far humans will go to 'get the look' they erroneously admire and what animals have to suffer for it. The TWH's are just another example of the same sort of mindset imo. :( Rollkur another...

It seems to become the norm in those circles and no one sees it for what it is and it's effects. :( Those of us outside are often seen as numpties who know nothing!

Some might appear worse than others but is that any excuse or make any of it any better or humane?

I think they should be named and shamed, and this is where the rspca, whw should be investigating these horses "trainers" and believe me i use that term loosely :eek: .... You dont have to starve or neglect a horse to be cruel, and in my opinion this is the epitomy of cruelty, how can this horse, eat, drink, or even breath !!
And if that means well known "professionals" (laughable ) are done with cruelty, so be it, if this is what they think is good humane training methods

God this is disgusting i still can't see what it achieve.
Surely once they haven't got their chins strapped to their necks they won't hold themselves like this? Gross :(

... so true, and again.

OMG these make me feel sick, the poor horses - this is cruelty and should be reported to RSPCA and WHW as soon as it is seen.
The Tenesse WHs video makes me sick too, those poor animals. Why are animal welfare organisations not investigating this??

I did see something like this years ago but not that extreme. It was a gypsy type person with a youngster in it's stable. Put a roller and bridle on and then tied the reins to the roller so there was slight pressure on the bit, but not right onto it's chest...OMG

I agree. I would have no qualms about naming and shaming any yard where I found such torture.

Muff747 the extreme practices involved in Big Lick TWH's are illegal but money, prestige and tradition ensures it continues...

See any parallels anyone?

I saw this used once on a small stallion showing cob, albeit not as harsh or tight but it was still tight enough to get a curve on his neck. He couldn't eat, couldn't drink and had been left with it in for over an hour. He pawed at the stable door in protest and the owner simply said, 'I'll put in on a hole tighter in a minute'. How caring these owners are to inflict pain and distress onto their animals simply for looks.

Nice, really top way of training- not!! Honestly, what are people like!
I was once told by a well known trainer to basically do that with a horse that I had that was naughty- stick a tight pair of side reins on in the stable and shut the top door. Needless to say I walked away.

Sadly I know somebody that did just that. She went off for a lesson and just left the horse in the stable. She picked me up at the end of her drive and off we went for a couple of hours. When we got back she said I've just got to untie ++++ and I followed her chatting away. I nearly cried when she opened the stable and I saw the horse. Sad thing is she couldn't see what was wrong with doing that, we had quite an arguement over it and i've never spoken to her since

Easy for me to say, but did you challenge what you saw ?
I personally couldnt have said nothing but i do realise not everyone is able to challenge and dont like confrontation, id have asked them to tell me what this torture was to obtain, them went through them like a dose of salts.
Anyone caught using this as a means of training horses should be banned for life from keeping horses and from competing in all competitions with horses.
Sorry if im ranting but i feel really strongly on this form of severe abuse
