disparaging remarks from 'trainers' when paying mega £'s for a lesson

I have the utmost respect for my horse's previous owner who was having a lesson on him when she still owned him and was struggling to get something right. Instructor offered to ride and proceeded to hammer him at pretty much flat out gallop over the same fence, 'until he got it right'. He is sensitive and was starting to get quite worked up.

After 5 minutes, owner walked up to him, took him by the bridle and said to the instructor 'I don't think he's going to learn anything from this, so you might as well stop wasting your time and mine. I'll pay you for the full hour, but as far as I'm concerned the lesson is over'.

The look on the instructor's face was a picture!

I would love to hear others - these are a few given to me and my Spanish chap for starters!

I think I need a thick skin for some of them, but I don't take life that seriously!

Can you not ride your horse in with the others? - he is frightening them

Why are you using those daft stirrups? (sprenger bow balance ones - I have been dragged by a horse before as foot got stuck)

I don't like his action. I don't know what you are going to do with him

Ride with your leg longer, no longer than that (difficult as I am only 5')

You need to shut his mouth - use a flash on him

why are you using a flash?

I dont like your saddle (funny that one - I had one made for him and dinky me & sold side saddle to fund it - but its like riding on air and suits me and horse!) also strange that trainer had own range of saddles on the arena fence!

I could go on - no negativity here - just bafflement!

Hmm I think you and I have met the same people!
Have you also had the " what do you do with them?" comment form a judge.
All good fun.

Some people just don't like certainly breeds of horse and I know two instructors that do nothing but slag a friend of mine's young andalucian mare off.

Perhaps you should be looking for a specialist spannish trainer.

I certainly would not put up with crap from someone I am paying good money too!

This is also very true , there's a chap called Bruno who comes over from Portugal in the better weather and does a few clinics in the area. He can get my horse and I going beautifully in about 5 mins flat.

You don't need bitchiness for the sake of it! I'd find it difficult to hand over money more than once to someone who made me feel bad. I left a school lesson once when my normal trainer was replaced by a disparaging dragon.

I was once fetched off my horse by my instructor - i thought she was going to show me something on the ground but she actually put a girl on my horse whom i dispised - i mean i hated with a passion - I am ashamed to say i left the arena in embarassment and wished the ground had opend up and swolled me - i just wanted to walk away and never return - but i ended up standing like a 5 year old watching as the instructor encoraged said girl to give my horse a thrashing - and tell me thats what it needed twice a week to sort it out and i was to pay said girl x amount for her to do it - i was also told thats the way the horse needed to be ridden - i never let said girl get on horse again - but stupidly continued with same instructor unitl i had zero confidence left and was paying for 5 to 7 lessons a week - and getting worse ! i did eventually leave said yard - but i dont think i will ever recover my confidence but i will never ever get off my horse in any circumstances again and if i have a crap lesson i dont blame myself for being stupid i blame the instructor for not being able to teach me.

I am still ashamed of this incident to this day and its nearly 3 years ago now
