Just had to park my car up in the neighbouring village as the police had closed the road on my way home. I spoke to a lady as I parked up and was told that a horse had been hit by a car 50 yards up the road and the vet had just had to shoot it.

I had to walk past the poor creature to get home, little dun pony only about 12-13 hands. spoke to a neighbour a bit further down the road who said that it had been trotted/cantered in the field opposite and had just run out into the road in front of a car.

Rider, driver and everyone else concerned is ok, no injuries etc. I just can't get the sight of the poor pony out of my head. I was hoping at some point to have a pony at one of the local yards, and I know this is likely to be 100% accident but it has really disturbed me.

Although I suffered in our accident, at least I am lucky enough not to have a memory of Benson in the road, I feel so much for the other rider with us, who had to deal with him.

Not nice at all and i completely understand how you feel as i have been there before - excpet I got a call saying my mum's horse had been killed on the road. I went outside and could see the main road at a standstill. I have never run so far in my life. Got to the scene of the accident to see a horse dead in the road - it had run out into the road and hit a caravan, gone through the front and out through the back. It was not pleasant. Turned out not to be our horse though. He'd made it across the road somehow. Still, the image is still in my head but, sadly accidents do happen but at least it seems that the pony in this instance did not suffer too much. RIP little dun pony :-(

I had to walk past an accident the other day on the way to work - a motorcyclist had hit a car. I had to walk past him lying in the road, it was quite shocking. Paramedics were on the scene but it was still pretty horrible to have to see it.

*hugs* That must have been awful!
It's a sight I very very much hope never to see.
It's why I'm campaigning for better road awareness for both riders and drivers. (I know sometimes it's unavoidable, but other times it really could have been prevented!)

Many thanks for all the supportive replies :-)

Completely agree with the need for better road awareness of horses for riders/drivers. I always cover myself/horse with hi-viz when hacking and will be trying to promote it even more to my friends from now on.

Unfortunately I don't think it would have made a difference in this particular situation but any step in the right direction could save a life someday (human or equine)
