DM Article re. shooting Thoroughbreds

Yet another article with a very sound basis dressed up by the DM, twisting it. I agree with you Bounty that articles like this can cause more harm than good with people who are very inexperienced 'resucing TBs'. I think the indusrty as a whole needs to look into this to work out if there is away to start to solve this issue. But I also would much rather have the horses PTS'd like this than abbandoned or shipped of to the continent.

BUT why are there no comments on the bottom of the article? Have the DM decided they didn't like any of them?

I don't really understand these people sla@@ing off the DM, if this practice didn't happen they wouldn't be able to report on it. The people who should hang their head in shame are these disgusting breeders who produce surplus stock.

I also get very irritated with these people who call others ' bunny huggers' just because there are those of us who show a bit more compassion than these hard faced individuals.

The horse world should get its house in order with some of these welfare issues before being so quick to denigrate those who highlight some of the suffering.

Its not the fact that this practice happens its the manner in which the article is written that is what is being 'slagged' off as you put it.

I agree with you the racing industry really, really needs to address this issue, but articles like this are not going to help.

I agree that the article is very sensationalist, but what is really tragic is that this is actually happening. No problems with the abbatoirs, as they do a valuable job, but it is disgusting that the racing industry continues to overproduce so many horses, not to mention the fact they are often not bred for long term soundness and struggle to hold up to hard work.

I think it is a real shame that there is no program in place for trainers to place failed/retired racehorses in, to get them reschooled to a reasonable level before selling on to riding homes, rather than having them shot or moreorless giving them away to anyone who wants, whether they are capable owners or not.

The industry could fund many sanctuaries, but it would rather invest in giving punters the best of facilities at the tracks. They spent I don't know how many hundreds of thousands of pounds developing a Grand National simulator ride. Then there's all the fancy function rooms, champagne bars, state-of-the-art betting systems and full scale course refurbishments. In the mean time thousands of perfectly healthy horses are slaughtered because they are no longer profitable. With what was recently spent on Ayr racecourse, several herds of horses could have been cared for the rest of their lives!!

And please don't say the abattoirs aren't to blame. They could very easily discourage the slaughter of healthy animals by setting up some kind of adoption scheme. But since they are as devoid of a conscience as the industry they profit from, that will never happen.

Those of you who thought the article was "utter tripe" and "a pack of lies" should stop living in cloud cuckoo land!!

When are the Daily Mail journalists going to do a story on the over production of cattle, which results in thousands of animals going for slaughter each year?
I would rather the animals went for meat, than be incorrectly 'cared for', being passed round from one person who does not know what they are doing to another, to then end up at the sales x number of years down the line, with poor growth pattersn, poor teeth bad feet, worm ridden etc. Better a short decent life than a longer miserable one.

Sensationalist writing and yes it does worryingly give the green light for novice owners taking an ex racehorse on ( been there done that and very glad I had help for the steep learning curve). However, I would much rather the horses go to an abbatoir in this country than either travel on live shipments to the continent or fall into the unfortunate cycle of neglect that is so often seen.

At least some owners/trainers are taking responsibility for the horses future.

Every cow, sheep and pig killed at an abbatoir is healthy but I doubt you think they should set up an adoption scheme for them. The abbatoirs are doing a job, it is not for them to filter the animals bought to them.
