More addictive than heroin and as expensive. I so miss owning one to ride after retiring the last. Without my share pony fix I feel my mood ebb daily! He is prozac in pony form! I’m financially better off but would happily be poor again if other half was in agreement. Current financial crisis really not helping my cause! Ruin your life?? Depends what you want from life. Without horses I’m just sad.

I would say probably? But I’m a workaholic so at least this job gets me exercise! Doing two college courses, have a part time job and look after the children! (2 horses and a dog)
Wouldn’t change a thing..but maybe buy more dogs?

Is it worth it?
Absolutely!
The joy I receive from his simple companionship and friendship is immense. The feeling I get when he shouts for me when he hears my car. How he puts his trust into me. Those things are worth the money , energy, cold , wet , tiredness and everything else.

Some lovely comments on here ☺️

I’m lucky that I’m able to have horses without it causing the stress and worry etc although I’ve had moments like that in the past. They do impact your life and maybe family and non horsey friends would have a different view but for me they absolutely enhance my life. I’d probably have worked longer days/hours although I came back to horses after university and my career was already underway so they didn’t impact promotion at the time. I might even have had kids! But I don’t regret any of it.

Great for de-stressing, getting me out and about in the fresh air and countryside, giving me drive and motivation, and I’ve made good friends along the way. And they’re just lovely to be around, most of the time!

I absolutely love my horsey life, I really couldn't imagine a life without them. Every morning and evening I look forward to going to the yard and look forward to weekend plans I have with them.

Even the days that I feel like I didn't ride my best, or things didn't go to plan I still get off and feel so grateful for my therapy fluffballs.

No, they don't ruin your life. But, they certainly dominate your life. But mine also save my sanity, give me a purpose to get out of the house every day, keep me fit, provide a great social outlet at the yard and generally give my life a focus. Not sure what I'd do without them.

No they don't ruin it. But they make their owners appreciate, a hot bath, clean clothes, a plate of stew and dumplings with a glass of wine after a day on the yard in the middle of winter. And how great is a bottle of pure water after shifting hay bales in thd middle of a drought. What a life style, love it.

I loved having horses in my life for over 60 years and would still love to have one in my life.. I cannot ride again due to a serious accident but if my lottery came up i would buy a place with land and rehome a few that needed some tlc.. as that is unlikely i have had to come to terms with no horses so have got another dog to challenge me,

Nope I adore all of it, even without the riding I love being outside, seeing the seasons, spending time with my horse- all of it is my happy place.

Now if you want to talk about expense, stress and life ruiners I would say having children. I couldn't think of anything worse.
