Ok so I already own two horses, one of whom is on loan. I have seen a horse for sale, that if I can purchase for the price I have in mind, I would really like to buy.

Potential new pony would only cost a few hundred ££, and I can afford the livery for two horses.

Anyone want to persuade me to either buy or not to buy!!!

Don't think about if you can afford two horses, inc the new one, think about if you can afford three if your loan has to come back.

If I put my practical hat on nobody NEEDS another horse........ But, if you have the money and the time then why not? Two is always better than one, eleven is always better than ten.... 😜

I thought you only need one 'good' horse . . You really sure you want the commitment of another?

What about cost, other things to spend your money on. Also, how do you fit work around keeping the horses fit? I don't have time to red my 'one' horse at present . . .

Think long term future plans . . . X

But then do any of us really "need" even one horse... probably not!

You never need to buy any horse. I especially do not need another one. I've just arranged to view one on Sunday though

Yes, quite! We rarely need anything where horses are concerned, but when does that stop us eh?! But thinking sensibly, for a short moment, factor in the time, energy and cost inc what would happen if all three hit some snag e.g. Vets bills etc. If you can manage that, then go for it!

One horse:

DIY Livery: £195 per month
Shavings X 10: £100
Shoeing: £100 every 5 / 6 weeks
Hay - 6ft bale: £40 (but can easily go through another half)
Feed - Top Spec - col conditioning and balancer + chaff: £100 - easy !

Wormers... exciting stuff to buy that you don't need.... extra tack... carrots... treats... I reckon def hitting the £600 a month.... and to think about having 3 horses !!!!

Yes I know I'm OTT with my horse... but all of the above does not include lessons - which I was having weekly £40 !!!!

Just adding it al up.... I think it would be cheaper me going on livery LOL ....

JJF are you in an expensive area? I pay about half what you do for DIY as my 2 come in under your budget :)
I feed lots of hay and very little cheap hard feed, my bedding costs are far far lower, (£250 every 4 or 5 months keeping 2 on wood pellets).. helps that I no longer have a shoeing bill, but I do have 2 lessons a month ;) no way I could justify £600pm on each horse :eek3:

OP, if you can manage 3 (in case the loan comes home) then go for it, if you like it. I wouldn't ever want to just have one ever again - always need to have a spare!!

In South East - Berkshire....

And seriously - I kid you not.. I've just shocked myself listing the basics out.... !

Keeping horses in this area is really expensive. I've also just googled a link that someone sent (as I was looking for DIY/Livery Yards in my area).... Assisted DIY is £75 PER WEEK! - Think I may go for that livery at £120 per week 365 days a year....

Hence I was shocked when it was mentioned a 'third horse'...

AND I MISSED OFF HORSE INSURANCE AT £83.64 A MONTH !!!!!

Nt forgetting my own mortgage, dogs, car etc ..

I have just got a 2nd horse. I didnt need it ... well I kind of did need a companion for my horse but any old pony would have done that job but i thought why not have two ridden horses and then you can ride out in company. Well riding out with a friend is all very well and good but when no one is about you have two horses to do ... oh who am I kidding, go buy the horse :)

We do not list the cost of owning a horse on the forum. You are in breach of the rules and could be banned ... please do not scare yourself or us by listing costs please!!!! ;)

I did a spread sheet one year.... Never again. Burying head in sand is a much better option! I am currently on a ban from getting anymore 4 legged furry animals, but that is only because I have just had a baby! (Of the 2 legged human kind). I have 4 horses, dont really need any of them, but they are not going anywhere.

If finances allow and most importantly you really like the horse, go for it

Wow, you have more energy than me. I only have one and she takes so much time, but I do stand there talking to her and kissing her for about half hour before I leave lol x
