Do I sell him or Free to good home?

I bought my 2 year old WBxTB 3 weeks ago who is amazing but only really made the decision to have him as the lady I bought him off said I could keep him out with her others indefinatly which is round the corner to my house. Today been given 2 weeks notice so need to make a decision. No Livery yard will take him as he is 2 plus we have no grazing available and as I only have 2 weeks I dont know what to do! Obviously losing the 4 figure amount I paid for him will be a kick in the teeth but I do want him looked after etc. Help me make a very hard decision. The only reason im thinking of free to good home is I have 2 weeks!!

I don't understand why his age is an issue for the livery yards..... is he still entire?

Why wouldn't a yard take him - I see no reason you couldn't find one unless he's a stallion??

Don't give him away, that's just generally never a good idea.

Why has the lady changed her mind and given you notice? All sounds very odd...
 
Please dont be a troll. i get proper sucked into troll tales.

Ask around for grazing, there much be a load of random feilds around. Thats what i did, picked some feilds, found out who owned them and then called in on the owners and ask... got me a paddock for free :D
 
I can see from a previous post that he is a gelding... the age should not be an issue.

Where abouts are you? I am sure there are many people on here who can help you find grass or DIY livery locally.

If you no longer want him then selling may happen overnight but it could also take weeks if not months. Giving away horses is never a good thing but if time is against you then I would approach charities to see if they can help or look for a livery that will sell your horse for you and deduct any outstanding payments (no idea where these are as I have never had to use one!)
 
There are loads of options and avenues to explore as amymay says..... unless you are a troll in which case yo can stay under your bridge !!
 
I dont know, she could be for real, we loaned our youngster out (3 rising 4), it turned out that he wasnt allowed any turn out because of his age & was only allowed to be turned out in the school & that was limited, he also wasnt allowed to be ridden in the school with any other horses. Needless to say he came home shortly after he left.
 
Well if you are for real - where are you folk might be able to point you in the right direction as to someone or somewhere that can help

I wouldn't go giving away a horse just like that

Yes he is a Gelding and the reasons I have been having from Livery yards is that Youngsters can sometimes be trouble! This I find hard as he has the manners of a 12 year old. To be honest my main reason for wanting to sort it out is I have 2 children and a non horsey husband who only went for me having a youngster because he was set up in this field near me. She has said that I cant stay as her landlord found out she was subletting. To be fair to her lots of people talk over the gate and have asked if they are all mine! To which I obviously replied no.
Im just finding it stressfull and its taking the pleasure out of buying him in the first place.
Im in Hertford if anyone knows of anywhere??
 
Well if you give him to someone where are they going to keep him ????

Have you asked your vet / feed & Tack shop / dentist / farrier - these are the people in the know for the small quiet places that wouldn't turn up on the web
 
a troll= someone who goes on forums and makes up strange stories to get peoples attention (at least thats my understanding of it!!)

May be a bit far out but have you tried around Hatfield Forest... there are a few yards near there.

I am on a yard in Luton with spaces but even further away! Don't be discouraged by anyone who has turned you down already, I was on a great yard for my 3 year old when I got him and my friend kept her 2 year old ID in St. Albans without any problems :)

Failing that, package him up and send him my way :)
 
Why not go straight to the landowner and explain.

Either way there are other options and giving a horse away for free has its risks..
 
i would deffo speak to the land owner, was it he/she who gave you your notice or was it the lady who was subletting? if it was the landowner then go to your nearest farm and speak to the man in charge, i did this and hey presto a field lol. Even if its just tempory least then you dont need to give your horse away. :D
 
I have experienced similar problems with regards to youngster and livery yards!

I had a yearling filly, asked if I could move her to a local livery yard and was told no horses under the age of 3 because they are trouble and destroy things!

I then moved my filly to another yard and after a few months was asked to leave because 'youngsters are trouble' and she decided she didn't want any on her yard anymore!! (My filly had chewed a bit of her fence and so I was told to get her off immediately!)

I found a lady with a 5 acre field to rent who wasn't precious about her fencing or anything and it was totally ideal for my youngster(s) by then!
 
Regarding him being two and having difficulty finding livery: I had this myself years ago when I had a youngster. All the main livery yards refused to take my 2 year old gelding, saying he would be bullied by the other (older) horses he'd be turned out with. In those days, livery horses tended to be turned out into large single fields running as a big herd, rather than small paddocks like nowadays. On the other side of it, being confined to a small paddock 24/7/365 can be pretty boring for a youngster - so no wonder they're 'trouble' and/or start chewing the wooden fences (best to use a strand of electric tape to prevent this, I find.)

These days, if I have a youngster I'm having trouble finding livery for I find a local stud instead where I can livery the youngster out with other youngsters. Summer grass-keep varies a lot from stud to stud so it's worth 'shopping around' and alway establish whether the quoted weekly winter keep includes ad-lib hay/haylage in the fields. If not, find out how much extra this is. Otherwise bills can get expensive if you're not expecting the 'extras' added on. I speak from experience :rolleyes:

Don't give away "free to a good home" coz the "home" any horse is likely to get with this label is a one-way trip to the knackers yard.

You could try loaning him? Maybe there's someone who'd like a project horse to be going on with, for free. But you'd need to be fair to them and if they've put in a lot of work in backing etc., you might need to say "loan with view to buy".
 
Thankyou for all your posts! I have been to view a field this evening which is perfect but £300 per month and is 5 acres so now just got to find myself 2 friends lol!! I really dont want to get rid of him, i would not have bought him if I didnt want him it just gets such a headache.
Putting him on loan with view to buy is a great option so ill keep this in mind!
Once again thanks everyone its nice to vent on here and get like minded opinions!

as for the livery yard situation, it is a stupid ruling BUT i do know of a few local to me that advertise stating no younger than 4yrs old. don't know why as i know lots of youngsters that are better mannered than older horses.

i hope you find somewhere to move him to but please don't do free to a good home, there's always an alternative option. what about moving him further away for now but in full livery?
 
I live just north of Hertford and I have a 2 yr old filly that I keep at Writtle College Stud. I keep her there because she can live in a herd of youngsters and they treat them extremely well - they are handled under expert supervision by all the students and my filly is a dream to deal with because of this.

It's also incredibly good value for money.
