Do I stand a hope in hell of selling an in-foal mare right now?

So, have managed to end up with an in-foal mare (will spare the back story!). What do you think are the chances of selling her? Is there a market for this right now? Will it help that she's a traditional black and white, which of course have become increasingly popular? Where on earth do I advertise her? Any thoughts much appreciated, as I'm feeling a bit doom and gloom right now.
 
Ah sorry to hear about that!

I've heard of quite a few people buying in foal mares.
Horsemart under "Broodmares" would be a good choice.

State at the top of the advert description (Bio thing) she is in foal too so they will see it when browsing.

To the right person yes :)

I take it she's due for next year, which means she can still be worked fine till New Year...I'd just have her in work, get some piccies of her ridden for reference, and state she's in foal for next year. There's always a market for a safe cob type, so just ger her safe happy hacker type, and you should find someone for her.

As much as people hate it, I'd pop her up on dragon driving.

Or if you really didn't want her in foal, it might not be too late to get her injected to abort it...but that's a personal decision really.
 
She is due next year, yes - March/April is the vets guesstimate. Vet has put me off aborting the foal. Says it's most unpleasant and high risk. Just not sure about Dragon Driving. She's been neglected in the past and has turned into a total sweetheart, so I want to be careful about where she goes (yes, I know, want to sell but fussy about who sell to!). Will look at Horsemart. Just wasn't sure if there was any speciality websites for in-foal mares.
 
I only say dragon driving, as most people who want cobby types do tend to go there now. We always advertise on there and everytime have found the perfect person mostly and lovely homes. You can tell who you're talking to by a phone call most the time. HHO just use it to pick out the contraversal ones ;)

Horsegossip might be another one under the coloureds :)
 
I think you have a good chance of selling your mare that is in foal, as long as you dont care who buys her or what happens to the poor unfortunate foal. I think even giving them away would be preferable than trying to gain a bob or two.

I'd sooner sell than give away. "free to a good home" tends to attract the wrong sort of people IMO.

Words are failing me right now, I suppose it is dependent on certain standards re lovely homes.

That's rather harsh, since the OP is trying to make the best of a bad job.
Selling any horse of any age is always a risk, so why assume the OP won't choose a buyer carefully

Funnily enough, not that it's any of your business as to where previous horses have gone onto, but all have been normal private homes and not the single minded view you clearly have on the site as to who solely buys on there. Previous ones we sold were very nice ride and drive types or a couple of good quality ex-broodmares happy hacker types, who all went to standard private homes to people who we have remained in contact with and even still see! Not gone to ones where they're drinking out of batteries and eating barbed wire thankyou very much! We don't sell to just 'anyone' either. 95% of the time, call your own judgement as to who is interested in your horse and it's generally right. When you sell regularly, it's quite easy to see who is about what. Gut instinct.

It's a flipping classifieds site. Horsemart can have just as much drab on it also.

I must admit that I dont have that much to do with the bottom end of the market, so please excuse me for my ignorance on the matter.
 
Surely the 'bad' people who go on DD are just as capable of looking on horsemart etc if they are looking to provide a terrible home to some unfortunate creature?

I think all that matters to them is the price and probably if they can make money off it, so making a horse too cheap is not a good idea. Not that eventually selling the offspring would be a bad thing as long as it is all done properly.

Do you have local facebook groups? They are always seen by a lot of people and probably the first place I'd advertise now.
 
It always amuses me that some people seem to think that you get a better class of advertiser/buyer on certain sites. We all know from various threads on here that dodgy dealers tell their lies on Horsemart/Horse Deals/Horsequest etc.

Of course those of us who have enough experience can pick out a good horse wherever we see it.

Yes you do get some 'dodgy' types on dragon driving and some broken in underweight 2 yo's however you also get some serrious loving homes and some top quality riding/driving/showing horses..... NEVER tar people/things with the same brush. you get both ends of the spectrum on any horsie site.

OP i imagine if you marketed her propperly you would get some interest (im no help with sites) do you know who the sire is? if you know what she was put to then people will know what to expect when she foals. realisticly from a say 14Hh mare you could get a 12.2 section B type thing or a 16+Hh warmblood type. :D

Sorry Dragon Driving is a sale platform like any other, yes some of the people who advertise do not look like good horsemen/women but reputable studs advertise their animals on there and I certainly look at what they have for sale on their and I show a county level.
Just because you pay a lot of money for animal or have a smarter car than some doesn't make you a better horse person. I judge people on how I find them.
I would gets some good pictures of her ridden, and advertise her on Preloved, Horsehunter or you could push the boat out, Horsequest. Unless she is quality I wouldn't want to pay more than £500
I suppose you have to decide what she is going to cost to keep till the foal is weaned against what she is worth without the foal. Having bought a pot luck foal I would never again as you never know what you are getting, does any one want a 14.1ish cobx that was supposed to make 15hands?

Pearsasinger, I am talking about the sellers that use such a site, not the buyers who can take their pick. DD is an outlet for the poor abused horses of this country. If you have such experience of a good horse I am supprised that you dont have your own contacts without going onto such a depressing and painful site. I suppose *a good horse* is only relative.

GV, actually a good horse is a good horse, no matter where you get it from. I have plenty of well-known contacts, thank you, whom I have no intention of listing on here. From her previous posts on here, I imagine that PoppyAnderson is discerning enough to be able to weed out the inexperienced/heartless buyers. As PA is looking for a buyer for her mare, I thought we were discussing the potential buyers available, rather than the sellers.


I suggest that any-one who wants to learn about good horses of a variety of types has a look at the adverts that ex race rider has linked to. Any site would be pleased to advertise them.
