Each to their own - fair enough that some people think it is cruel, the fact is that there is a lot more to it than killing a bull, the grace, the poise, the man v beast is an artform IMHO. Have you ever watched a proper bullfight, not the promo stuff that PETA and the like churn out, a real proper one?
I went to the bull fighting stadium in Seville - I have to say I wasn't keen on bull fighting before then, but the history, the training, the horses and riders etc did make me amazed.
I stayed in a small town where I was talking to a local women about the bull fights, and how the bulls were kept like royalty - she showed me the fields where they lived and was very impressed.
Looking at the video it does look gory - but I can see both sides of it really, and I don't have a problem with the use of the horse - there are risks in everything whether it be eventing or just going out in a trailer to somewhere to hack. I do feel for the bull, but they have a good life and are treated with respect - which is alot more than alot of the animals in farms and slaughterhouses all over europe have!

Conversely, I know very little about bullfighting, so I wouldn't presume to judge something on simply how it appears, or base my judgement solely on the passionate outpourings of protest groups who appear to oppose keeping ANY animal in captivity for ANY purpose.
But this isn't about bullfighting, it is about that amazing horse and the skill of the horse and rider together - if I had just 10% of what they have I would be happy

I'm sorry, but (without reading the entire thread) HOW can you justify that??? I'm sure all horses adore being chased round by a tortured bull??
I have to agree with you. How anything can be called an "art" where the animal is tortured with those horrible bandillero things stuck into its neck/back (there's certainly plenty of blood) and then is always killed at the end, totally escapes me. If it was purely a case of the matador versus the bull (without spears stuck in its neck) and the bull was allowed to live, I might be able to understand it even if I didn't actually agree with it. I don't care how "well" they are kept beforehand, the end result is torture and death for so-called entertainment. It doesn't matter how well they "fight" either, they will still end up with a sword down their spine. I think it's so sad as the bulls are such beautiful animals.
I think the partnership is amazing, the art form IMO is sickening. Such a shame, as forester said, that one false move and that horse will be skewered and dogmeat.. But then I event, so go figure.

Am beginning to wish had never posted this video, however anyone who watches this and thinks the that the horse is a) being chased B) not perfectly happy must be blind. while i am not i favour of bull fighting per se, as wheezy said the true version is an art form but sadly has been bastardised into the horrors that PETA show so gleefully. That said the horse is beautiful, and i think i am correct in saying that one of the great horse men of the past has said that a horse forced to perform by whip and spur would be no more beatiful than a dancer forced by similar methods.
The horse did not choose its way of life, clearly loves its job and its rider and as such i stupidly thought HHO readers would apprieciate this short film (also clearly made with love) even though the setting is distasteful to many.
Thanks to all of you that have PM ed me saying you have enjoyed it for those reasons.
I appreciated it, thankyou.dont feel bad for posting.
to the poster who claimed I was defending it-I wasnt, just merely playing devil's advocate.
there is good and bad in all equine sports as there is in bullfighting. some understanding of the context on the part of all those who decry would be nice though. hundreds of years of culture, horse breeding, bull breeding (and what will happen to the bulls if bullfighting ceases?). It may not have any place in today's world but the equine culture that comes from it in both Portugal and Spain should be cherished.
anyone who thinks that the horse is scared or unhappy should perhaps go and meet an Iberian horse-my guess is that they've never been close to anything like it.
Yes, of course I must be blind as I do not agree with a single word you have just said.
You say it has been "bastardised into the horrors that PETA show so gleefully" - the video that you have posted is not PETA, and yet it is STILL sickening. The horrors are not blown out of proportion by the PETA, they are REAL and TRUE TO LIFE.
Yes, the horse's movements are impressive, but in this scenario I cannot appreciate the beauty of the horse when such cruelty is being shown. If you can ignore the cruelty, then fair enough, enjoy it if you can. I, however, cannot tolerate such practices.

I am glad you posted it as although I couldn't watch it all the way through it has made me think. (We only learn through being made to think). I think as this is something we do not see in everyday life we just don't get it.
I still don't
but it made me think.
I have never seen any films of bullfighting kind of stuff so this was a first for me.
