As the title really? I am getting increasingly frustrated with riders round here who don't. I must have passed about 20 this last week or so, I slow right down, give a wide berth and they just give you a snooty look. No smile, no nod of the head, no thanks - nothing. It really winds me up. How can we expect drivers to slow down if people don't thank them. In complete contrast I passed the local riding school where it was clear the kids were bare-back riding the ponies back to their field and they all thanked me.

yup, always have done, always do and always will do.

And if I can't put my hand up, there'll definately be a big smile/nod of the head instead

Absolutely do. If I can't manage a wave, I nod and smile or whatever I can - even shout if the sunroof is open!

Yes ,I always thank them and when teaching riding and road safety ,I always insist they thank drivers but not with whip in hand and it is probably safer to smile and nod rather than taking the hand off the rein to wave

I totally agree. I thank each and every driver with a huge grin and big "thank you" and a raised hand.

I know wayyy too many riders around here who are pig ignorant and rude.

Yes, I always do. Even if it's not safe to take my hands off the reins I always nod, smile and say "Thank you". It takes a second and encourages drivers to slow down for riders in the future.

I've been on the receiving end of a 'snub' from a rider after slowing down and going out of my way to make things easier for her and her horse. It made me very angry and I felt like beeping my horn at her to be honest - she made me so mad!

Exactly my thoughts. The other day I was at a house where the dog was out in the garden and was barking at a horse on the road outside. I had passed her (in my car) further down the road where I'd slowed right down etc and she didn't thank me then. Anyway the horse was dancing around as the dog was barking so I shouted the dog over and held him, shouted 'sorry' to the woman and smiled. What did she do, gave me a dirty look and rode past without so much as a bye or leave! Honestly, I wished I'd let the dog blinking bark at her.

Always thank careful and considerate drivers. Feel like getting out of the car and screaming at riders who don't do this, even when on very calm and sedate horses...so no excuse !!!.

There is one girl in particular who rides with another person and she makes my blood boil. Generally the "other" person will at least smile (just about) but as for this girl, uhhhhh she makes me so angry. Looks at you as if you're a piece of dog do. Don't know what her problem is, but I may have to get out one day and give her my views on her attitude

Its a shame there can't be some sort of 'internal' push to get everyone to thank drivers. You know a leaflet sent to everyone who has a horse, that sort of thing. Mind you as I type this it's just such common sense I can't imagine why people don't. In my experience the majority of people are not kids, they are old enough to drive and you would think they are even more aware of how important it is.

Not only do I always, always smile and say thank you to drivers but I once famously smiled and said thank you to a flippin empty car!!! Me and pal riding along a street with cars parked all down one side...drivers coming towards us pulled in where they could to make room for us ... so BIIIIG smiles and thank yous. Then my mate started laughing her socks off and told me the one I had just smiled so cheerily at and given a loud thanks AND a wave to, actually WAS parked and had no-one in it! When I do it folks, I do it with vigour!!!!

Always, big smile, thank you and hold up ( hand that is not bank robbery

) I do this with traffic, bicycles, people anything really.

yes i do and often i thank them even if i dont think they have incase they have ried to slow down and i havent noticed...better to be safe!

Definitely, even if its only a nod and a smile when its not safe to use a hand. Mind you round here there are a few riders who could use some manners toward other RIDERS..My ex racer is still learning but three times now we have passed two fat cobs hacking out together. Each time I've slowed down and pulled out of the way to let them pass, one of the cobs puts on a right song and dance while my tb has excelled herself and not moved a muscle - all I've ever got is dirty looks! Am I doing something wrong?!

stop and say something about their lack of manners - i do - makes it worse for the rest of us when they behave all snooty.

Yes I do that then I worry I am rewarding their 'bad' behaviour and they think they are going slow enough even if they aren't. I think too much.

I always say thank you, however sometimes im on automatic piliot and i think i might look grumpy! Think i have one of those faces! I say thank you to everyone who makes an effort, people on foot, with dogs, cars and sometimes i even stumble across a nice cyclist to thank! Sorry if i offend anyone but we have some very rude cyclists around us, cant count the number of times i have had a load of abuse directed at me for nothing other than riding my horse along a country lane!!!

I only thank if they slow down. If I'm unable to raise hand, I nod and smile. We usually only hack in summer and people have their car windows down so say thanks as well.

The ones that speed past get a very stern look from me and other riders.

Mostly, but it is not often that they do slow down around me. As a driver/cyclist, I do not feel that I have to be thanked for not shoving a rider and horse in the ditch.

Absolutely yes! I thank every single driver that passes me, even those that go past a bit fast or don't slow down...in the attempt at making them wonder why I thnked them! I have no pride and arrogance when riding on roads like some riders seem to have and because I ride at the same time in the mornings I would prefer people to get used to me being there and become more considerate. I am so regular that I end up having drivers wave at me even though I don't know who they are! As a consequence I never seem to experience the troubles that some riders seem to.
I cannot stand those people that say they only thank certain drivers...it is the bad ones that need thanking in order to change their attitudes and make them think a bit more. And I could rant for england about those that say they carry a crop to use on car roofs when they don't slow down...get off the road I say...because you are as bad as the driver that did not slow down!

I thank everyone who slows down, if you don't slow down I start flapping - asking you to slow down - and yes if you don't slow down - (meaning 60 odd miles an hour past me - you do get the finger
